The Colt was "the 1911" for many years. I would not buy a new one now but some older models are well worth owning.

My preference now is Kimber, Wilson, Dan Wesson, and Les Bear.

Have another cup of Kool-Aid, pick yourself up a full size. Its only a cult if you're on the outside looking in!

Thought I would purchase one several years ago to see what all the commotion was about. Currently have 7, and experiencing evil thoughts about purchase number 8. ;)

I don't drink Kool-Aid and I gave up Caffeine this year.

I know there are variations of the classic 1911 as compact versions and even some chambered in 9mm.

I shoot only 5" .45ACP 1911's. Why bother with anything else?

I do not feel that there is a cult following for 1911's. This pistol design has been around for quite some time and In my opinion, the basic design has not yet been matched.

Own two and shoot them often. No, it is not a cult thing in my opinion, just a fine example of brilliant engineering that has not really been surpassed by any other design to date for what it is.

    Cult??? Where??

As a line in the song "Alice's Restaurant" went, "It's not a cult, it's a movement"

As my late mother used to say "Either go big or go home".

I think the 1911 is well past the point of calling it a "Cult."

There is a P7 cult. There is arguably a CZ cult.

    But 1911s are a religion.

    Nice gun!

Thirtysomething years ago, when I first got into handguns, I was swayed by a lot of propaganda - Why the heck would anyone want an ol' .45ACP dinosaur when the mighty .357 Mag was supposedly so much more effective, and the (then new) WunderNines were all the rage?

But, I was suddenly confronted by a deal I could not pass up - A brand new-in-the-box Colt Combat Commander .45 for about 2/3 MSRP. I figured that if I was going to look down my nose at the 1911, I ought to have some personal experience with it to support my opinion. That was all she wrote. From the first time I fired it, the .45ACP became my favorite, and I now have three of them. The only reason I don't have a lot more of them is that I have a lot of other expensive hobbies, too!

    Have a ball!

    Regards,
    Jim

I realized that when I first posted to this thread, I forgot to include pictures of my 1911,

Thsi started out as a Cold Gold Cup, the Late Austin Behlert did a complete overhaul and this is what I ended up with.

The work was done over 20 years ago, probably during the last year he was working in NJ. It's my main carry gun and it still is a accurate as it was when he finished with his magic.

Welcome to the dark side... we have cookies. I'm still fighting the urge to buy a second 1911, even though I don't really need it.
