In the last year or so I have really gotten into firearms, shooting as a hobby, and concealed carry. I have owned 5 pistols over the last year and still have 3. I currently have a Walther PPS in .40 S&W, a Taurus snubby in .38 Special +P, and as of today a Ruger LCP with a Crimson Trace on it. The problem is, for some reason I am ALREADY thinking about the next gun I "need." So while thinking of a niche I haven't filled with a handgun yet, I realized I could use something bigger, more powerful, and higher capacity than what I have. It would be mainly a nightstand gun (my PPS is currently filling the roll but I think I can do better) but also get use as a car gun for trips to bigger cities, and sometimes as a CC gun in the winter under a coat.
So, I have decided that I would like a gun in either .45ACP, .45GAP or 10mm. (10mm could double as my backpacking gun but I am thinking I will want an excuse to buy a bigger revolver later.) I want at least 10 rounds in the magazine but more is better. I want a 4" barrel or bigger. I want to have the option of using lasers, lights, and night sights. I would like it to not be SAO so the trigger is similar to my other pistols. And I want to keep the price to about $700 for the pistol itself but could pay more for a good, practical reason. Also, I shoot Glocks well, but I don't really like how they feel in my hand. My coworker has a small one in 10mm that I shot and was accurate with, but I don't know that I really want one for myself.
Any ideas? Is this even a good reason to buy a new gun?
Kimber is my choice, I have two on my night stand, a Ultra CDP II and a Pro Carry II and for back up I have two Glocks in the drawer, A G-23 and a G-26 Also a Ruger LCP on my wifes night stand. If you are found here at night, you will be found here in the morning.
Seems to be that the XD's are in the majority here for HD guns. High capacity, high caliber, reliability, great quality........how come these guns are not talked about more with CC'ing ?? I'm thinking the size aspect.... but I dont see why Glock has to rule over this.
The XD has a balance issue...for those who dont like them. They feel very top heavy compared to other major autos on the market. That is one major advantage I see for the Glock.
For home use, I have a G30SF with a red Unimax laser and a streamlight TLR-1. Have 3 G21 (13 round mags) on the night stand ready to go if necessary.
I carry 2 of the G30SF's with green Unimax lasers in a Smart Carry ambi unit. Works for me.
Good luck and always stay safe.
Hey Wildfire Adn. I lived in the Yakima/Naches/White Pass/Chinook Pass areas of Eastern Washington many moons ago. While in the Forest Service I was on the (forest) fire line in the Leavenworth, Peshastin, Chelan, and Stehekin areas. I skiied at Mission Ridge many times ... any way, you should check out the availability of ammo, but I think .45 is the way to go for a home defense pistol. For the trails, look for a revolver in .44 magnum or .45 long colt. Ruger makes a sturdy revolver in both calibers ... so does Smith&Wesson but you will pay more. Happy Trails!
I got an XD-9mm loaded with 16 rounds of Speer Gold Dot and a spare mag with the same in my nightstand. If that doesn't work my wife has a .38 police special in hers. Any bad guys coming in our house during the night are probably gonna wish they'd made a different choice.
For the Nightstand Role, I specifically decided on the XD becuase of its capacity, compact size, and safety features. Love 1911s too but for this role, gotta go with the XD. I think you get all the advantages of a GLock with some added bonuses, imho.
Home Defense scenario provides the obvious reality that god forbid you have to use, at least you know what the environment will be - the house. In that environment, I feel the 45acp is the best choice for 2 reasons.
1.) it's a more powerful round, and I don't need to worry about carrying or comfort. If somoene breaks in my house, Iwant the biggest caliber I have to stop the threat.
2.) I think the 45acp will be less penetrating and therefore less dangerous to bystanders inside the house and nearby neighboors as opposed to 357 magnum, 40 cal, 357 sig, and even 9mm.
Having a dedicated night stand gun is a fine excuse. My firearm budget does not allow for me buying too many pistols so I just use my XD-45 that I use for everything else. I get the "buy another gun" bug very often, but quickly realize I've already got an amazing handgun. I'll probably buy myself a j-frame one of these days, but other than that, if I get my hands on a tactical light for the XD, I'll be good to go.
Very interesting reading. My wife's bedside gun is a Colt Detective Special with 38+P Hornady Critical Defense rounds. I keep a Glock 32 w/Double Tap's (357 Sig with 13 rd mag and one in chamber) on my side plus a 12 gauge Winchester riot gun in the nearby corner with Remington 2-3/4 #4 buck. When I leave town on business trips, the G32 becomes my wifes bedside gun as the 357 Sig has significant KE but is easy to shoot/control as she weighs about 90# dripping wet. My bedside gun is my daily carry so when I chose to carry my Kimber Tactical Ultra II (45 ACP), that becomes my bedside gun. When I'm out of town, the Kimber does not become the wifes gun since it is harder to control with +P rounds and she wants more rounds that 7+1.
I will be picking up my Lewis Machine Tool (LMT) M4 upper and lower in two days and that will become the wife's "corner" gun in the bedroom.
I keep my M&P 40 Full size on night stand,it has night sights,CT laser grips, and a surefire flash light, right beside it too..The one on top in pic...the Bottom gun,my Glock 27,has same night sights, and CT laser grips,my work and EDC gun. :haha:
This is what I keep by my bedside. Remington 870P loaded with 00buck between nightstand and bed, and M&P full size 45 with TLR2 light/laser combo attached with an extra mag full of Gold Dots in nightstand drawer.
Warning ,we both practice shooting................ A LOT!!!
My Glock 27 with nitesiters and crimsom trace laser grips and 120 lumen mounted lite. If that doesn't work than its the mossberg 590 pistol grip back up. Oh Yeah, the wife has a SR9 and a 410 pistol grip mossberg. I forgot our warning system, our bullmastiff and rotti. in the bed room and they sleep very lightly.
Bulldog 44 sp and a surefire light. We have a second floor bedroom with alarm system, so I'm counting on 5 powerful rounds working with plenty of warning. And don't forget my 7 lb toy fox terrier...she's a great warning system, and vicious as well....
Mine is a Glock 17 w/CT laser 17+1 Hornady Critical Defense 9mm kept in a mattress side holster about 1 ft below my right hand as I sleep and I also have a Mossberg 500 Persuader 12 GA pump 6+1 buck shot that I can grab as I walk by the foot of the bed headed for the door or beyond.
