Im with Grant on the 1911 suggestion, but do understand the lack of rounds. My Dan Wesson is my nightstand gun, loaded with Hydrashocks and night sights, with my SP2022 and Mossberg 590 within easy reach as well.

Kimber is my choice, I have two on my night stand, a Ultra CDP II and a Pro Carry II and for back up I have two Glocks in the drawer, A G-23 and a G-26 Also a Ruger LCP on my wifes night stand. If you are found here at night, you will be found here in the morning.
Seems to be that the XD's are in the majority here for HD guns. High capacity, high caliber, reliability, great quality........how come these guns are not talked about more with CC'ing ?? I'm thinking the size aspect.... but I dont see why Glock has to rule over this.
My trusty Springer 1911. Been my carry partner for19 years and makes a big hole/holes with Winchester Ranger 230's.

My Mossberg 500 Home Defense w/ "00" buck in a mattress rack and 6 more rnds. in a stock bandolier.
For home use, I have a G30SF with a red Unimax laser and a streamlight TLR-1. Have 3 G21 (13 round mags) on the night stand ready to go if necessary.
I carry 2 of the G30SF's with green Unimax lasers in a Smart Carry ambi unit. Works for me.
Good luck and always stay safe.

I think the night stand is the ideal place for a Revolver... in .357 Magnum and about 4 or 6 inch.
Hey Wildfire Adn. I lived in the Yakima/Naches/White Pass/Chinook Pass areas of Eastern Washington many moons ago. While in the Forest Service I was on the (forest) fire line in the Leavenworth, Peshastin, Chelan, and Stehekin areas. I skiied at Mission Ridge many times ... any way, you should check out the availability of ammo, but I think .45 is the way to go for a home defense pistol. For the trails, look for a revolver in .44 magnum or .45 long colt. Ruger makes a sturdy revolver in both calibers ... so does Smith&Wesson but you will pay more. Happy Trails!
I got an XD-9mm loaded with 16 rounds of Speer Gold Dot and a spare mag with the same in my nightstand. If that doesn't work my wife has a .38 police special in hers. Any bad guys coming in our house during the night are probably gonna wish they'd made a different choice.
I have a XD45 on my nightstand w/ 13+1 golddot's, next to my 870 of course.
For the Nightstand Role, I specifically decided on the XD becuase of its capacity, compact size, and safety features. Love 1911s too but for this role, gotta go with the XD. I think you get all the advantages of a GLock with some added bonuses, imho.
Love the XD45!!
