    New Addition - 40 caliber

Went to a gun show today looking for a 40 caliber. I got to handle most of the ones I had narrowed my list down to and I made my decision (which was not one on my original list):

    Springfield XD-40 Sub Compact

I intended on purchasing a Glock 23 (I've shot my buddy's) but it seemed a little large for CC. I handled the G27, but it felt awkward in my hand. I looked at the CZ, Taurus Millenium, S&W, HK USP (no one had the P2000sk which was at the top of my list), and countless others.

This one has the trigger safety and backstrap safety (NO thumb safety). Case, lock, holster, 2 mag belt clip, speed loader, 9 round flush mag and 12 round extended mag. Under $500 out the door.

It is the same size as my Taurus PT709 Slim 9mm, just thicker. I can use the same IWB holster for both. It breaks down super easy. Loaded chamber indicator and cocked striker indicator. I put 50 rounds of Federal 185 grain FMJ through it flawlessly today. Carrying Federal 185 grain JHP. Not as much recoil as I expected. Very accurate. For me, it shoots better with the flush mag rather than the long extended mag (not sure why).

Overall, I'm very pleased. It fits my hand and carry needs, has flexibility with the two mags, doesn't kick as much as I anticipated, and the accuracy is great. I like the added punch of the 40 caliber compared to a 9mm. My small 9mm felt like a 22 after shooting the 40.

Here are a couple of pics (it's no fun without pics).

Congrats. I just got my new (to me) XD40sc on Friday. I'm heading to the range tomorrow and pretty darn excited. It CC's pretty darn good, especially in this mild (60's and 70's) weather we're having in Austin. Here's a pic of mine. I got the stainless model.

Well congrats to both of you... Those XD40's look nice. I have an XD45 and really like it... I've been looking for a .40, just because I don't have one... I'll have to look at these a little more seriously...

Being an XD man myself, I predict you both will enjoy your new acquisitions. My XD9 Subcompact has been dead on reliable, is fun to shoot at the range, and is one of the pistols in my summer carry rotation. It's tough for me to pick a favorite from my small stable of XD pistols because they're all so danged reliable.

I've had the same gun since December now, I like it a lot, I like it so much I'm also adding an XDm-40 to go along with it.

Also consider a Peirce grip extension as well, it gives a place for your pinky to hang out.

Good choice. I have the XD 40 and 9 SC, and I love them both. It was a real tossup which one to carry. While I love the .40 S&W as an a SD round, I shoot the 9 slightly tighter and the lure of 13+1 in a flush mag was too hard to turn down.

The recoil of the Springfield XD-40 sub compact was not bad. Much less than I anticipated for a short barrel compared to the G23 I shot, which is a little longer and larger. Pretty accurate for a short barrel too. Very easy to carry and conceal with the 9 round mag and versatile with the 12 round mag. I typically don't like the backstrap safeties, but I don't even notice this one is there. I'm sure it will get carried quite often.
