The only model of the S&W 10mm that was ever issued by the FBI was the 1076. No 1006 or 1066. I hope that helps.

Thanks Gonzo. Ive noticed that the 1076 was recalled back to the S&W factory. Would you happen to know why?

Long story. If you go to the S&W forums and do a search for "FBI", you will get a lot of really good info on the entire 1076 saga. All I can say with personal certainty is that the ones that were sent to S&W and then returned for issuance in the field were outstanding pistols. Big? Yes. Heavy? Yes. But scary accurate and a pleasure to shoot. It was a shame that the Bureau chose to go with a poor choice in 10mm loadings.

The 1076 was the model issued to the FBI, just under 14000 were produced and not all of these went to the FBI. It is my understanding that if the slide is marked with the caution "capable of firing with the magazine removed" then it MAY be an FBI issue. Other hints like magazines, boxes, and parts have been known to be changed out after the fact. S&W sold off a bunch of demonstrator 1076's that had many FBI features. Part of the reason that many of the FBI issued pistols (about 2000 from the run of 14000) are available on the used market is that they were warranty returns to S&W, after the FBI decided they wanted something else. The only certain way is to write S&W with the serial number.

There were problems with that whole era of S&W pistols that had a frame mounted decocker (this included 9mm and 45 ACP's, not just the 10xx series). The standard FBI issue round for the 1076 was the Federal 190-grain JHP at about 1090 fps from a 1076.

I heard stories of FBI agents that tried to keep their 1076 after the FBI had moved on. I've also heard stories of people firing 25000 rounds with only replacing an extractor.

IMHO, the 1076 I handled did not point "right" in my grip and I was not comfortable with how much it rattled. I did not find it difficult to grip, but then I find the 1911A1 grip to be fine. I did like it that the 1076 does NOT have a grip safety and "seemed" smaller dimensionally than a Government sized 1911A1. I would have liked to have fired it after a detailed inspection but I was not provided with the opportunity. Would I buy one? Yes, because I am a fan of the 10mm and because this is a piece of history. The 1076 is a perfect example of design by a Government committee. Although not a modern design, it is one of the better examples of a pistol purposed designed for the 10mm round.

Absolutely true. In some cases, it took arm twisting from supervisors to get the 1076's turned back in. Lots of loyalty from Agents who liked their 1076's.

I carried a 1076 for years when I was a local police officer in Va. I can tell you that mine had the warning about firing without a mag so I don't think that was a FBI only marking. While my issued gun was not a problem many in my department had reliablity issues. In fact we switched to sigs when one of my firends got into a gun fight and his S&W 1076 jammed on him. Not a good situation. All in all I was glad we switched and did not buy my issue gun - JMO.

I had a 1076 and it was the best 10mm I have ever had.It was even better than all 4 of my Colt Delta Elites and I love my Colts.I wish I did not sell it but at the time I was in need of money.

I have had two 1066s and they are great. First one had night sights which I don't do well with during the day. The other has standard sights and is one of my favorite pistols to shoot. I don't carry either one any more because of capacity and old eyes. I would trust them is trouble any time. Though I don't carry it, the one with standard sights is the first item within reach in my safe.
