While patiently waiting for my final permit to show up in the mail, I have had plenty of time to look at pistols around where I live. I found a couple of Smith & Wesson .40 cal's for under $350. One new, a SW40VE, and one used model # 4053 which I can't find online. Might not be correct. Anyhow, any opinions on the Smiths?

I dont like the $0 in general so i wont offer what i think of it but avoid the sigma sw40ve the low price looks good but you wont be happy with it
Perhaps pop for a bit more intially and get a Glock, XD or other . the S&W 4000 series is a heavy gun to CCW. Like Bud said , the Sigma series is less than ideal.

I believe the 4053 is a DAO S&W third generation on an alloy frams. I'm pretty sure it is a compact frame.

I had a sigma in .40. It was impressive to look at and felt good, price was certainly attractive. However, I got rid of it in about two months. It was not a good shooter. Terrible trigger and some FTF problems. I'd not recommend it to anyone.
