How do you become a firearms instructor?

Hey, I remembered reading that Bunny and a couple others on here were firearms instructors and I'm interested in pursuing this as a career. I'm a novice as far as guns go, so I will need to get more experience, though. What do you need to do besides take the NRA courses? How do you get hired as an instructor and are there many openings in this field? Any advice/help is appreciated.

Good luck making it a career. It can be done, but its tough to compete with people who perform the same function with little to no experience. You can make it a nice little side business though fairly easy.

At any rate, the best course of action is to find a local shooting school, take every class they offer and get to know the bosses. Once your skills are up to par, they might take you on as a instructor. That is how I got started in the private sector, but I mainly do military and LEO stuff now.

Good advice from Sixto...And get a good liability insurance policy for yourself!

Still have my instuctors certification but I gave it up about 10-11 years ago because of the possible liability teaching to the general public.

There was a brief moment when I considered that but then I realized that I would most likely just suck at it. In the military it was one thing where I had a captive audience. However, the first wise ass I came across would be my last and I would be asked to leave.

Man - described me! I was range safety NCO and zero range cadre as well as 1911 instructor in Army (every time my unit went to the range) - they picked me because I could shoot and I was a "gun guy"

I even picked up extra trainer responsibilities when other services had to qualify their people to go overseas
