Was at the gun shop today... this caught my eye...

Taurus 44 .44 mag... nice looking, ported and not too expensive. I wanted an Anaconda but this for half the price... I'd probably shoot this thing once or twice per year.

    Anyone have this gun?

I have that gun with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. Had it drilled and tapped for a scope and use it for deer hunting. It shoots well and is a solid gun in my opinion. Just make sure you have hearing protection on. The ported barrel is LOUD!

I don't know what the Taurus are going for these days but if your looking at a big bore revolver you must take a look at Ruger before you decide. I would not be surprised to see you find a Redhawk as cheap as that Taurus and they are tanks for sure. Make sure you look that way too before you buy.

The porting makes it very loud! and just a word of warning...both my friends guns, both 44 mags the teeth on the cylinder are wearing badly, sometimes cylinders not lining up with barrel. Local gun shops let me know about this problem, you might want to find out if Taurus has fixed this problem before spending the big bucks! I went with the Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag and have no complaints!

IMO I am not a big fan of Taurus mag revolvers...S&W or Ruger also best / good choices. You do get what you pay for.

That's interesting... I've thought about the 5-shot 44mag as a field/hunting back-up gun... Like the OP, I'd probably only shoot 50 rounds a year out of it...

JMO...If I am buying a big caliber revolver, I want Smith and Wesson, or Ruger.

I would look into a Ruger, they are built like tanks and IMO feel good in your hand.

Based on Gun Genie prices in my area, there is about $120 price difference between the Taurus and a Redhawk.

You will have to add another $200 to the Ruger before you can get a S&W.

My preference would be the Redhawk.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

I just picked up two used Redhawks in .44 with scopes for $450 a piece... and would not hesitate to buy a used Redhawk. Commonly without a scope see them for under $500 all the time. Used that is. One gun I would never hesitate to look at used is a Redhawk. So keep that option in mind if you really want a big bore.

I'm not a big fan of the looks of the Ruger or S&W revolvers. I'd probably end up going Colt before those two. Thanks for the replies!
