Beretta Model 21A is a good DA auto.
Short range, but is inexpensive to practice with. And at 3-4 feet, I wouldn't feel too under armed with it as long as I could hit the soft parts. And isn't THAT the real question? Can you HIT your target points with the gun?
And how do you know you can? PRACTICE. And a 22 is the cheapest way to practice a LOT!

I've got the H&R 922 in a 3" bbl. It's not the most accurate in the world, but fun to shoot. It's the old version that requires you to depress a button on the front of the trigger guard, remove the cylinder pin completely, and remove the cylinder to unload and reload. You also have to use the cylinder pin to push the empty shells out of the cylinder. Something like that would fit the stated purpose.

My buddy has a Taurus 22 revolver. Very accurate, but it binds up. It is the only 22 double action that I have shot other than a Colt 9 shot snubby that I use to own. I would not buy a Taurus just based on the one I have shot. I would spent the extra money and go with the S&W.

I just bought an H&R 949 9 shot 22 LR double action revolver on GunBroker. I'm thinking this is going to fit the bill. Thanks for all the good advice gents.

My Walther p22 has been a great little pistol with 0 issues. I would definitely recommend it...I believe you can pick up used ones in the $200 range; that leaves $200 for CCI mini mags!
