STI Guardian or Kimber compact CDP II

These are my choices for my first 1911, just curious if you guys have any experience with either one of these guns. I've done a good amount of research on both and I'm actually leaning towards the Guardian. There is a dealer here that carries them and got my hands on one at a gun show last weekend. The Kimmer though I can't get my hands on, probably just have to buy one and hope I like it. Not really wanting to spend around $1100-$1200 on something and its a 50-50 if I like it or not. Oh well. Let me know what you think. Both seem like great choices no matter what. Any help will be much appreciated. Brent.

I just commented on a similar thread last week. I have owned both. The STI Guardian had several failures to feed properly. I called and talked to them, then sent the gun back to STI. After about 4 weeks I got the gun back. SAME problem. They told me to change magazines, I did... and had the same problem. I couldn't count on the gun so I got rid of it.

The Kimber is lighter weight and has worked very well for me. I have carried the gun on several occasions but I'm so hooked on Glocks, I usually just shoot Kimber at the range.

Among forum members and as a general rule for that matter. STI is cooler and sexier that Kimber because it's a custom gun maker, and they look great! But- function must trump looks- so I say No to STI.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either one. Go with the one that's calling you!

STI is a very reputable company and I have heard less bad experiences with them than I have with Kimber. Having said that, there are probably more Kimber's out in the field so more reports of issues would make sense. All manufacturers put out a clunker every now and then and it really sucks if you get one. With the prices being similar, go with what your instincts tell you and be happy with your choice. If I had the money, I would probably have one of each.

Ok, I know this is an old thread but I'm having the same issue in 2013 as the OP had in 2010! My problem is the other way around. Plenty of Kimber Carry II's in El Paso but not a single STI Guardian! As a matter of fact, the only STI in existence at any of the LGS's is a .40 Escort. I'm usually a Colt kinda guy (Commander specifically) but I'm looking to expand. I'm leaning toward STI since it's a Texas brand. (For those of you not "in the know," we Texans are....kind of a big deal.)

I just got a Kimber Compact CDP last month. I have 600 FLAWLESS rounds through it. Eats up reloads along with Hydrashok and Golden Saber. I picked this gun up due to the commander length barrel with officer grip. Im limited to guns I can choose as they have to be approved by CA. That being said I dont regret the purchase at all. I have heard of many Kimber horor stories but that can be said of any maker if you look enough on the net. Fit,Finish, and Funciton have all met my expectiations. The only bad thing about buy it, my first 1911 is the fever it gave me. I already have a full size Springfield TRP on the way.

My vote is "c" none of the above.

    Buy a Colt.
