I am having issues trying to figure out which 1911 to get. Im stuck between a Kimber or a Springfield. I cant afford a Dan Wesson or Nighthawk or any custom like that. I also hear Para makes a good 1911 what does everyone recomend. This will be my first one dont really know a whole lot about them. what does everyone recomend? I am also a southpaw so an ambi safety is a must.
FWIW, I've researched this to death, and have a similar budget (okay, I ended up buying a G30 - no regrets there). However, when the 1911 time comes, it's be SA. Kimber and Para just seem to be hit and miss on what you'll get.
*** Note, southpaw was not part of my consideration - your results may differ.

Yeah i have a buddy with an RIA and he swears by it. And I know a guy with a springfield and it runs great too. I guess w.e the best deal i can get this weekend when i go to the shop is what ill bring home.

I like the Springfield Mil Spec. It's a good gun out of the box and is a great platform to build on as your needs and capabilities grow.
Also, read JD's blog. It's full of good, common sense reviews on many of the 1911-A1 on the market.
Do a search as well, there's a ton of good info here about 1911s.
Good luck, every gun collection should have at least one 1911 in it.

The next thing is i still dunno if i want a full size 5'' or a 4''. I like the 3'' but i already have a good ccw and i want a bigger .45

First off, Take JD up and read his Blogs they are fantastic.
You didn't write whether your going to cc or home defense,etc.
I would recommend a Kimber Ultra
I own one and have a Ultra CDP on layaway that's just me
Remember you "get what you pay for".
RIA runs about$475.00 and up, also don't discount the Para GI, about the same price range I have shot a couple down range (GI) and for that price you could buy that puppy and customize it to your like.
I also own a XD45C that is sweet(not 1911) but something to take a look at!
Go to your local gun shop and take a look around to see what "you like" and what's in your price range.
Come back to this great forum and do a search you will find a wealth of info.

But really my vote would be for a 4" Kimber. Either a Compact or Pro carry. Unfortunately I don't believe they come with an ambi-saftey.

I carry and love my Springfield LW Loaded, great pistol! I would like to add the 4" and the 3" at some point but those would be frivolous purchases... probably in a distant future. I have no problem concealing the full size though some times when I lean over to the right while sitting I feel the muzzle. The grip is not a real issue for me carrying it at 3-3:30.

I can shoot right handed in fact im almost completely ambidextrous but i prefer to shoot lefty. I carry my duty pistol (Glock 22) right handed and im perfectly comfortable and my ccw is right hand carry but I feel like i can shoot a lil better left but i am really working on being just as profecient with right hand as left as said above.Learning to shoot right handed

I was in the same boat as you my friend. I can write, throw, and shoot with both but unlike you I decided to try and master shooting right handed because every gun seems to be setup for the right handed shooter.

Every 1911 I have ever bought,1st was a series 70 combat commander in the late 70's and currently own a RIA compact,SA Mil spec SS,Colt Combat Commander XSE,have all run great right out of the box,I field strip and clean them,then I grease the slide rails using a q-tip,then I will manually work the action about 50 times,seems to help break them in before a round ever goes thru them.All mine eat everything from LSWC to Federal 230+P HST
