I've read the #1 link in the entire chain is magazine failure. I carry two on my belt at all times. The old saying still holds: it's better to have and not need.....

I carry a single magazine, mostly for malfunction and not round count.

I do my best to always carry two magazines at all times. 99.9% of the time, if I can legally carry, I've got 2 spares on me. It's not so much for the additional ammo as it is the simple fact that with any quality firearm, the magazine is the weakest part of that firearm.
Weakened springs, cracked, bent, or deformed feed lips, bad ammo, etc, are all the kinds of things that can happen without us knowing about it and cause us to have an even worse day than you're having if your CC weapon should fail when it's needed, by carryng a second spare you decrease the odds of having a faulty magazine or bad ammunition available to you by 50%.

If you can find the room for 1 spare magazine, you can find the room for 2. I've just never heard of compelling arguement for only 1 spare. Weight? Well, since we're discussing 1911 magazines, a second 8 round magazine weighs around what? 12-15 ounces maybe? If 3/4 of a pound or a little more makes the difference in what you can carry, then perhaps you should switch from a steel to a polymer handgun in the first place.

Belt room? We're talking an inch and a half (approximately)of more space needed. Surely no one out there is wearing Batman's batbelt and doesn't have that little of space available to them.

In the end, it's everyone who carries personal decision on how many or if they carry spare magazines. I'm not going to convince someone who is against carrying extra that they need to, nor are they going to convince me that I shouldn't carry extra. But for someone undecided, all I'll do is tell you my reasoning on that 2nd spare mag that I don't leave the house without, and let you decide for yourself what's best for you and your carry habits.

I currently carry one spare but it's a double stack Glock mag which is a little more to carry than a 1911 mag. The G23 mag also holds 13 rounds instead of 8. I have a cheap rig for my 1911 that I was playing with and the magazine feels like it's not there so I figure I might be able to swing it with a double mag holder and carry 2. I was curious as to how many of the members here carry 2 mags to kind of give me a little bit of push one way or the other. Of course I would always carry at least 1.

Three. Shoulder holster. Helps to balance the weight as well.

Two single mag carriers. I am lean enough that I don't like any gadget on my belt that takes up too much real estate, individually.

    exactly.
it is hard enough for me to conceal one. Once i get my new rig set up, if I happen to find that I can easily conceal two then I will.
I dont see a reason not to carry two if you can conceal two, but I think carrying one is fine as well.

edit: and if i do carry two, it will certainly be in two single mag pouches, not a double. given my size i NEED to be able to put them in very specific locations.
