On my personal OWB holsters I like an abbreviated slide guard/index pad. It doesn't completely cover the slide but it give me an easy reference for re-holstering, and helps keep my shirt out of the way.

I like one, helps keep the thumb safety in place, especially if you have an ambi safety. Keeps the shirt out of the way etc.
I have the sweat shield on all of my personal OWB/IWB holsters.. As stated above there are many advantages.
I make all my holsters with them,keeps things from chafing
That's the only way I buy them now.

Lack of one on a OWB holster shouldn't be a problem if you OC with your shirt tucked. Personally, I prefer them.
I'm going to go with the I like them crowd, they go on all my holsters by default unless someone requests it without. Generally I find the tighter the OWB rides the more necessary it becomes, I've got a prototype that I could probably get by without it, but most of my designs I personally would run it on(same goes for most other makers as well). I think it's a matter of comfort, especially with something like a 1911 with a pointy backend, the other advantage at least on a boned leather holster with a 1911 is that it keeps the safety in position as well.
So depends on body and what you prefer but I'm a fan of them:)

As my companies name implies, all of my holsters have "side guards" and is one reason I started making my own holsters.
I agree a side guard/sweat shield is a must for me and all the holsters I make, for comfort and ease of re-holstering!
Thanks for the replies. I should also point out that I have a fairly slim waistline (32"). Not sure if that would make a difference.
That's the only way I make them. It's a must if you carry 1911's, Hi Powers and Sigs
Why Sigs? There's no thumb safety (unless SA only). Do you recommend the shield on all OWBs? ThanksQuote:
