Rafters IWB holster in their brown finish - have a question?

I just recieved a rafters IWB rig for my 1911 in thair brown finish and have a question about it. On my particular holster its alot softer than the black one I have. Anyone else here have this same rig in this finish, any particular reason for this? It has the open mouth and dosen't colapse or anything but its really soft compared to my black one from them is this normal?

You will find this to be true with a lot of maker's holsters, especially if they are not using a clear acrylic top-coat. (If they are, then all their holsters will usually be the same stiffness). Essentially, the chemicals used in the black dyes will stiffen the leather more-so than other colors; especially if it is an alcohol-based dyed. In a brown or tan holster, the leather may not be dyed at all - it may be oiled and then sun-tanned, literallly.

Mark is correct in all accounts. Finish process, color and type of dye used and whether or not an acrylic is used to finish the holster will all have an effect on the stiffness. The location of the leather used on the hide will also have an effect on it.....the lower down on the cow you go the more stiffness you may lose. Oiled holsters are always softer than a dyed/clear acrylic'd holster.
If the holster loses retention due to the softness of the leather then its a problem, if it doesnt then youll be fine.....only time will really tell.

I mean don't get me wrong rafters makes great stuff and thair build quality is as good as other custom makers I've bought from IMO I was simply curious as to wether anyone here has seen holster in differant finishs being softer then others is all.
