I see holsters with open ends at the barrel end and I see ones that are closed. All of mine are open. Just wondering the merits/problems of the two.

I prefer the closed end because the muzzle is completely protected that way. The down side is that any junk that gets into the holster won't fall out the bottom.
Two replies two different opinions.
I prefer open so that stuff will fall through. Also an open end will allow you to carry different barrel sizes of the same weapon.
Pros and cons to each bit mainly it comes down to personal choice.
I prefer open for OWB, closed for IWB.
You bet it does! Congrats! If you go to work for the government, Please try to do something about gun control.
Maybe its just me, but unless an open holster extends a ways below the end of the gun, I usually find some way to maul the muzzle. I use both types but prefer to use the closed end when possible.
I like my open bottom. It allows me to carry my K9 and PM9 in the same holster. K9 just sticks out a tad. I also have an open bottom for my FN. It covers the entire barrel, but is open. Sometimes i'm out in the rain etc... and it keeps moisture from getting too bad in there. Easier to clean out when it gets gunky too.
I seen a guy online when I was looking up reviews for the CBST, he had an open holster and it made a hole in his jeans. He decided to put a piece of leather over the muzzle to fix the problem. He was the only one I seen that happen to so I guess it's rare.
I'm new to carry and have been trying OWB open holster. I am struggling with the issue of my shirttail only hangs about 2" past the barrel. I'm thinking if I should expose, by accident, the end of the barrel, it looks like GUN. Maybe if it was a closed end holster it could possibly look like a cell phone holster.
Actually I'm looking for a holster that might sit up a little higher and IWB. Most of my shirts hang about the same place. One friend said I'm wearing my pants too low :)
I feel exactly the opposite. If I'm OWB I want it closed because I'm likely open-carrying outdoors. The closed bottom minimizes the chance of foreign matter getting into my muzzle (think of a quick slip on a steep, muddy hillside filling the barrel with unnoticed dirt). If I'm IWB, my clothes are protecting my muzzle from foreign matter. As for gunk entering the top of my holster? My pistol caps the top of my holster for the vast majority of the time, so I'm gonna' be most concerned about unintended stuff entering from the bottom.![]()
There are only TWO kinds of people in this world; those that describe the world as filled with two kinds of people...and those who don't.
Open for IWB - so I can get the lint out more easily once in a while. Closed for OWB - to keep my muzzle safer. There are exceptions for everything though...
