Received a Hume OpenTop holster today for my XD40-4, and it is very tight. Hard time inserting and extracting due to being so tight. How can I loosen up the leather abit so I can be able to draw?? I heard someplace, which I cant find at the moment, about using waxpaper, wrapping the pistol and then inserting and leaving it for abit. Is this correct? Any suggestions appreciated.
I had the same problem. When I spoke with the maker he told me to sit in front of the TV for an hour and insert and draw the gun over and over. Perfection after about 3 episodes of Mash.
My friend Rhome always gives me waxed paper with my new holsters, and has one piece wrapped around the gun to start with. If one piece doesn't work, use two the next night. It stretches and waxes the interior at the same time. It works, but I still think waxed paper is for sandwiches...
As we speak (well, sorta), my Glock 30 is wrapped in two pieces of waxed paper in the gun safe.
I must be lucky, or getting highest quality work, since I've never had this problem. My leather holsters seem to be snug enough for good retention, but offer a smooth and fairly easy draw.
Now, you'll have to wonder where I bought all three of these holsters...:bier:
Don Hume stuff, for the money, isnt bad...but Ive yet to see one that isnt so freaking tight that its a problem to break the holster in.
Just an observation.........Shoot well and god bless
Okay, wrapped the pistol in 3 grocery plastic bags inserted into the holster overnight, and now it has loosen up enough that I can start drawing and get it just where I want it. Didnt like the waxpaper route, but was told about the plastic bag routine, so did that. Thanks all who replied.
I got two holsters from Ron at www.leatherslinger.net. There were tight too so I wraped them in a little plastic wrap and let them sit in it. It seemed to work pretty good. I'd rather have them tight and make a custom fit that to loose and have the gun flop around.
two new Fist holsters for my Glock-36. Sat in front of Fox News and inserted/withdrew the weapon MANY times...I also wore the IWB's around the house for several days with intermitent drawing sessions.
The holsters were fine (fitted but not loose) in just a few days.
I bought an open top OWB pancake style holster from Wilson Combat a few weeks ago, it is so tight, I really have a hard time getting the gun in and out. This is the second one, I sent the first one back in for the same problem, customer service sent another one out.... same problem.
I have looked in three grocery stores, they do not sell wax paper anymore because it is not a fast selling item.
Thanks for the tip on wrapping the gun in plastic, I'll do that tonight !
Even after you wrap the gun and let it sit in the Hume OT holster for however many days, it's still a good idea to strap it on and do a bunch of presentations/draws/in-n-out/what have you. Once the holster is strapped on, the leather wings with the slots flex and tighten up on the weapon enough that additional breaking in is necessary.
ChrisM...... I have done that, using the zip sack that the holster came in, like you suggested... Will see what gives.
DanM.... yes, I found that out, so I used a zip tie in the loops to pull the bat wings into the holster.
Again, thanks to all. I IWB with my C-Tac more than OWB, even though can OWB here, but too many sheeple's :sheep: So prefer to be CC. But still wanted a nice leather holster along with my Sherpa from Blackhawk, that I use in inclement weather.
Good thing I came across this thread. I have my first Hume holster on the way for one of my guns. My other leather holsters are okay just putting the gun in the holster and letting sit for 24 hours, and lots of repetitions of drawing.
They should work. Think of it as boots. I wear thick wool socks with my new boots for the first couple of days to help form the leather. The same principle goes with your gun and the leather holsters.
