I'm looking for a horizontal mag carrier

Title says it, I've tried the IWB for the mag's also but found I don't care for it.

    I do carry a variety depending on the dress. The most common are a M&P 40 full-size and a M&P shield 40.

criteria are retention when I don't want it coming out, comfort, ease of removing when needed and conceal ability, any inputs as to which ones are appreciated, especially from those who have tried more than one.

You left handed or right handed (I am both)? There are several options for an opposite belt carrier.

Sorry left that out, I'm right handed so I'll be grabbing the mag with my left.

I typically carry a spare mag in my left front pocket. It isn't the fastest reload, but with practice it certainly isn't bad. I am thinking about going to belt carry for the spare and adding a second in the pocket.

I'm looking for a horizontal mag carrier

Something simple and discrete is to use a multi tool pouch. No one is the wiser if they happen to see it and you still have quick access to it.

I really like the Safariland 123. You can get it in various sizes to fit different mags. It's well made and adjusts to fit any belt size tightly. I also really like the SHTF Gear horizontal mag pouch, especially the older style one. The new one is a little different (at least the double stack version is) and I don't like it quite as well as the one for single stack. Lastly the Garrett Industries K1 is great, too. It's not specifically a horizontal carrier but it's fully adjustable and can be used vertical or horizontal. It's the fastest of the three to draw from but it's not discreet, the mag is visible if you don't have it covered with your clothing (which is why it's fast). The other two will look like phone or multitool pouches.

Check out DeSantis. I really like this one:

.40 M&P FS here, and also a horizontal carrier.
I just found a folding knife case that was a matching size and use that. So many people today are carrying huge phones on their belts that almost anything can blend in. I haven't seen my same brand anywhere lately but there are dozens of similar models of varying quality.
Holders that fasten with simple Velcro will eventually lose their ability to close securely, a few (like Maxpedition) are perhaps a bit 'overbuilt' although they're tough as tanks.

DeSantis makes a quality horizontal sheath

    And Maxpedition's take on things

    - links in images, clicky.

For 'formal occasions' you might find a shiny leather eyeglass case appropriate, especially if it uses a rare-earth magnet to keep the flap closed or has a medallion.

Dale Fricke horizontal carrier is what I currently use.

I own a Kydex holster company and have been working on a design off and on for some time; I just have not come up with something I like more than the Fricke carrier.

I have one of the MagHolder.com kydex horizontal mag holders for a 1911 mag. It uses a friction fit plus a plastic spring part that clips into one of the view ports on the mag. Important note. The assumption of this holster is that you pull it out of the holder to the rear. I don't and prefer to pull toward the front. I guess it's my fear that the mag could fall out the back and I wouldn't know. Just be aware if you order. If you are like me, then for a left side MagHolder, you would specify right side, so that the opening is on the front. The order from has room for notes, so you can also explain what you want.

Otherwise the holder is excellent. The belt clip clamps around the belt, so you don't have to thread your belt through a loop in the holder to put it on. My only complaint: They don't make 'em for two of my three handguns: Springfield XDM-45 and Sig Sauer P227, both .45acp doublestack magazines. About a year ago, the mfr said they'd have holders for the XD/XDM 13 round .45 mags by the end of the year...of course, they didn't specify what year. Still waiting. The Sig P227 has only been out a year and a half so also not supported.
