I have, on the very few occasions that I carry a spare mag, slipped it in my back pocket. Easy to get to, but I am always worried about damaging it by sitting on it. Maybe bend something just enough to mess up reliability. Am I worrying about nothing?

I have sat on my 1911 mags for a while. Never had a problem, but I keep the mag near the outside edge of my back pocket too.

Murphy always enters the equation, so you have to plan on it. You can damage a mag doing many things, as well as strip your cartridges out or move them out of position. I personally never carry a mag unprotected, but your mileage may vary.

In a pinch I would and have, but like rocky said, I keep having to slide it to the outside, so not much pressure is being applied to it. It's kinda uncomfortable and to keep adjusting it, just get a mag holder/holster, they're not that expensive and then just keep it wherever you want.
