It depends - I rotate my shoes every day for 3-5 days, or they get mushy and real stinky - I perspire a lot - so the holsters need to dry out too if I get too ripe......N TX ain't no fun in the summer

Something I tried with sneakers but never tested with a leather holster was tu put them in a plastic bag and leave them in the freezer for 24 hours. The cold kills the bacteria which is the real culprit for smelly shoes, however I do not know what kind of effect it will have in a leather holster.
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

It's been over 100 degrees here for much of the last week or so with humidity like a swiming pool. My leather gear just keeps on performing like the day I bought it- I do a quick wipe down of holster and gun when I take it off for the day and I've yet to have any problems.
Body chemistry may have something to do with the odors your friend is transferring to his holsters. For my use, nothing beats finely crafted leather.
