    Taurus 605 Owners: Holster Recommendations

I just picked up a Taurus 605 .357 snubbie today. I would like some holster opinions. I already have a Smartcarry that will fit this and my G30 for deep concealment. I would like an IWB or OWB leather. I was looking at Galco Cop 3 slot or Fletch Hi Ride or Fist's #4 IWB. Price limit is a strict $75 plus shipping ( I make $5.15 an hour- gimme a break). Any opinions? I am pretty much open to any quality holster under the price limit. I don't need any exotic stuff, just plain old tan or black leather. Much appreciated.

Check out Don Hume. They offer pretty good holsters at good prices. I have several of their products and am happy with them.

I'd like to see your impressions of the 605 after you get to shoot it some.

I will have to check them out. I might get a chance to fire a good 50 rounds or so tomorrow (Wed). If so, I will post my thoughts. I have UMC 125gr JSPs and Remy 125 gr Golden Sabre BJHPs. I saved 10 rds of the Remy's for my speedloaders, but the rest if for the paper. I am curious how it does too. I owned a Ruger GP100 6" about 4 years ago (my first handgun) but sold it to fund my Glock 30.

Kicks like a mule. Hurts the hand. I have bony hands. My G30 with hardball is a lot nicer to shoot than the 605. I have the CT Lasergrips on it. They are hard plastic. I took the stock rubbers off to replace with the LGs. Haven't shot it with the stock grips on, prolly won't either. I really like the Lasergrips though ( Bday present from my fiance). I might try some paint on the fixed sights to try and get them to pick up better. The LGs are more of a sight confirmation/ in lieu of night sights rather than a sight replacement/ crutch. Really gives insight to how much muzzle rise there is during recoil. The ON nubbie (not the master switch) in the front of the LG digs into the first pad( closest to the palm) on my middle finger.

Ammo used were both from Remy. They were both .357 Magnum loads. First their UMC 125gr JSPs @1450fps per the box (prolly 4" bbl spec). I could only shoot five rounds before I quit. Those Fing hurt!! Unreal. That's all I can say. Unreal. Couldn't believe it hurt that much- I shook my hand a little after each shot. I didn't do any accuracy tests with those I just lit them up to see how the gun handled. That was some snappy recoil! I will never forget that. ( I had a proper high grip too, so that wasn't it.)

    Next up were Remy's 125gr GS-BJHPs @ 1220fps (again, prolly from a 4" bbl).
These were a lot better. Stout, but comfy. You knew you pulled the trigger but it didn't sting like the UMCs. Still snappy, like the 357 is known for being, but quite manageable. Accuracy tests from about 25ft offhand, single action were four shots into 1.5 inches with a operator error (I shot the last one DA as I forgot to cock the hammer) flyer an inch away from the group. Two cylinders (10 shots ALL SA) went just a tad under 4" for 25ft. Fixed iron sights, lasergrips off.

Pretty decent for a snubbie. I was expecting a fist sized group of FIVE shots. That outta do the job. That was with the Golden Sabre 125s.

I would like to try the Speer 125gr GD 38Spec +P loads soon. I heard good things about them. I will also try the Hornady 158gr XTPs as well.

Final thoughts: Practice with Specials, carry Magnums. CT Lasergrips are great, just wish they were rubber for my model instead of hard plastic. Am I glad I got it? Yes. Do I recommend it to other gun owners. Yes. Knowing what I know now am I going to practice with Specials? Yup, you betcha.

My GP100 6" with 180 PGs didn't kick bad at all, but the grip on the GP series is awesome and the gun weighs more then the 605. I miss that gun. I would like to get a 4" though. <sighs> someday......

    I have two J-frame .357s.
    One a M640 with 2 1/8 barrel and the M60 with a 3 in barrel.

I can shoot them for awhile with replacement Pachmayr Compac rubber grips. The factory grips are hard, and my experience is the same as freakshow10mm when I shoot with them.

Get some of the rubber grips, and it takes the bulk of the pain out of shooting the small .357s.

    Jerry
