    little help with Kydex please

I decided that I am going to build a kydex holster for my G23. I have a few questions:

1 thin vs. thick is one thickness kydex better for a IWB holster?
2 do you use anything other than the padded press to form the kydex around the gun?
    3. Do you use any type of barrier between the gun and kydex while forming it?

Any other tips or advise would be appreciated.

    1. either thick or thin will work.
    2. padded press is all I use to form the gun shape
    3. no barrier needed for anything I have done. Blue guns or airsoft replicas do need a bit of cooking oil to keep teh plastic from melting to the kydex(sometimes).

A sweat shield and some sort of padding or backing might make the IWB more comfortable for every day carry.
If you are forming a belt clip from the same piece, use a thicker kydex for better strength.
A smooth , non formed (or lightly shaped) side facing the body will make for more comfortable wearing. (as opposed to a well defined molding).

I use .093" Kydex for all my holsters Thin Kydex tends to break easy
Kydex will form to all the protrusions on your pistol as well and the ejection port, so it is quite easy to make a holster that is very difficult to draw the pistol from.

If you are going to make a belt clip at the top you should make the holster thick enough so that it will not bind at the top.If it binds you will not be able to draw very well from the holster. I don't make holsters but i have one as described above.

I just got done making a shell for my G23. I used shaped blocks of wood to form the sight channel. The blocks don't have to be perfect so don't spend too much time on them. Take your time and think through what will happen to the kydex in the press. You'll probably have to heat it up a few times :). For the shell I was making, retention is via a deep depression that fits btwn the front of the trigger guard and the trigger. I used a pencil to form the depression, but it was too wide - I'm gonna redo it with a smaller dowel. If there's something you don't like, you can block of sections of the kydex with wood to heat only locally and reform. Band saw is easiest way to cut - dremels suck at it.

No offense guys, and I'm only curious...
When Kydex holsters are so affordable, why try to make your own?
Are you hoping to improve on a style or carry position?

place some cardboard in the trigger guard area, or the kydex will "droop" in there and be too tight.

AZ, sometimes its just the pride of making somethign on your own, and some guns dont have decent holsters available.

For the same reason that I make my own spaghetti sauce, wine, beer, and Kielbasi. the sense of accomplishment when you make your own consumer goods. and for the chance to do some customization.

Also, the more you mess with it, the more experience you bring to other projects where you can't buy want you want. For $20 I've made a kukri sheath and a gun holster :).
