That should keep you busy for about a week or two. Then come back and read the responses, and you will know exactly what everyone is talking about.
Seriously, there are so many designs and makers your just going to have to start looking at them get some ideas of the ones you like then find out what people that already have and use them think.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

An XD40 was the first handgun I purchased as well. Shoot it a lot and be safe.

welcome and as for a quick suggestion I would stay away from a SOB Small of the back. I am not a fan personally and if you fall it will hit your spine. (pending you land on your back.) But suggestions above are good and you will find like many of us you will have a drawer full of holsters some work others don't.
Well, I guess it's a start? J/K, the XD is an excellent weapon.

Welcome to the forum!
Congrats on the XD40. I am not a big fan the .40 S&W round myself, so I have the XD40's slightly bigger brother the XD45ACP.
+1 on Comptac holsters!

I was going to suggest something, but when I read the following, I laughed so hard I fell off my chair and now I can't remember what I was going to say!
Lots of holsters and different carry options to try. If you get it perfect with the first holster you buy, I recommend going out and buying a lottery ticket immediately!
I sometimes carry in a leather combination OWB/IWB, but some prefer Kydex. If you have a critical need to not be detected carrying, I recommend adding a Smartcarry to your holster box.
