Madmike,
I agree. That's not to deny there may be some problems, but what doesn't have some problems? I've failed to release conventional thumb breaks for two main reasons. One, I simply miss. Two, and more troubling, is after the thumb strap releases, the thumb strap can get caught and not release the gun cleanly or at all.
Also good points about the jam and tear aways. As have I stated, just about any paddle holster will fail in retention drills and nobody is writing critiques about paddle holsters because they failed in retention drills.
It is interesting that two of the incidents the article referred to occurred with Glocks. I personnally know someone who shot himself while drawing a Glock from a non-retention holster.
It's funny in a way, I chose the SERPA to have some retention and specifically to avoid a thumb break. I believe the SERPA will prove to be far superior to a thumb break for reliable release - at least for me, I can already see that it's better.
I also picked the SERPA because I liked the natural draw stroke release, and it works just as designed.

To me, that "natural draw stroke release," you describe also felt quite natural. I suppose to others, it may not. Just as there's no one "perfect" gun for everyone, there's no one "perfect" holster, either.
Some forums will fry you for even mentioning certain types of holsters, others have a built-in bias for or against certain brands of guns.
Here, we seem to do a better job of avoiding this kind of counter-productive non-sense. Not that we all agree on everything, but I think we do a better job of keeping it all in some kind of perspective.

Serpa Holster
I had mine for a couple weeks only used two times so I can not
fairly pass judgement on it yet.I like retention feature. It vast
improvement over fobus but it's twice the price.

Twice the price, but twice the holster IMO. 2 mount options, better retention , tighter fit to body.

I also like the combination of the poly-whatever and carbon fiber. Much stronger material than my Fobus.
My Blackhawk will still see some use after my K&D holster gets here. No idea what I'll do with that Fobus, though. If I run into someone who has a G23 and needs it for some reason, I'll happily give it to them. Otherwise, I am something of a packrat.

Prior to my recent retirement I carried a duty weapon in a triple retention holster because of department policy. Practice and more practice with drawing (unloaded weapon please) from any holster is the key. As my instructor said it becomes muscle memory and a repetition drill. I also advocate know your truff, the treat level, and the need to react should (opps murphy's law) not be a stresser. Everyone out there both LEO and The armed citizen stay safe. Oh, yes I now carry a Blackhawk CQC and like it.
