There is no backing on the Spartan.
Just cosmetic differences, most notable the leather backing covering the hardware

It also says the bodies are different and not interchangable with the MTAC bodies. Not sure what that is about

I also believe the spartan is not finished as well on the gun side of the leather... I have the MTAC...it's worth the extra bucks IMO...

The kydex shells are different in that the MTAC has a tab that fits into a leather pocket at the front of the holster. The Spartan shell sits flat against the leather - which is finished very smooth/glossy, I think it's just a different shade of dye. I have the Spartan and don't feel the unfinished leather or hardware on my leg (boxers) plus it may help keep the holster in place as it isn't slippery. I figured it's an IWB so I don't need the extra finishing touches on the holster. YMMV.
