Quick-Access Pistol Safe on the Wall by the Door

I didn't want to hijack this thread:

    http://www.defensivecarry.com/vbulle...alth-care.html

....so I'm starting this one. I hope it's in the right forum. The thread above is about some folks getting home invaded by innocent looking visitors knocking on the door. So I started thinking about this. What about a quick-access safe mounted on the wall near your front door? It could be very innocuous looking but provide a fast way to access the "piece" if someone comes to the front door unexpectedly.

I suppose the one problem with the idea is that most pistol safes are designed for you to lay the gun down inside horizontally. I'm sure that this could be easily solved with a little creative thinking.

And while we're on the subject, does someone already make something like this. either mechanical (which I prefer) or electronic?

Not sure if this fits your description well enough, but it's the first thing I thought of when I read your post:

    Hide a gun picture frame:

Have it mounted/accessible near enough to the door and practice getting into it with speed.

One issue is that it doesn't lock, but in an emergency that would only slow you down. With kids around, I'd just use it when I came home for the evening and could keep an eye on it. Mount it high enough that kids can't easily get it - and never let them see it open, so they have no idea what it is. Keep it empty when you're not around.

Here's an option that flush-mounts inside the wall:

V-Line Industries Quick Vault Wall Safe
Battle Plan (n) - a list of things that aren't going to happen if you are attacked.
Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

Why not just have the gun on your hip? That would not only take care of the scenario where someone knocks on your frond door, but also if they kick it down, or if they kick down the back door, or sneak in a window, etc., etc.

Not a bad idea - but mine is quicker - I carry even at home - stays on me till bed time then it's on the nightstand.

But for those who don't have it on their person at home - good idea.

    I like the Hide-A-Gun thought...

Here's something else that I'm thinking about doing. We have a small reading room with a wall full of book shelves right next to the front door...

YUP! A gun on your hip is always faster than having to move to another room to get your hands on it.
BG's don't always come in the front door. I'd rather have my firearm where I am, unless I'm sleeping. At that point it is in the safe right next to the bed with the door open, and within inches if I need to reach it.

Depending on where you are in life, the gun on hip isn't always an option. My wife isn't down with guns, so we have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Adding kids to the mix doesn't help when my son has friends over. I have to be discreet.

I've stopped carrying mine around outside when working around the house, so I bought one from wallyworld, but once work os finished my 9c goes back on my hip. I'll be interested in the solution you go with...I'd like to have something for the wife to have handy in this way...

The only drawback as you unlock and crack the door open somebody bum rushes the door you will not have time to open the safe and get you pistol. You are going to be sitting on your bum from the force of the door hitting you. Most DC member will tell you that they would be looking out the front windows way before opening the door. It is not a bad idea but on your hip is better. I have ran downstairs myself in the evenings and grabed my gun before looking thru the peep hole or opening the door.
