Question for those who are NRA Basic Pistol Instructors, or other similar instructors.
The guy who owns the gun shop where we teach our larger CHL class said he has had some requests for basic gun/pistol safety instruction. The wife and I are both Texas CHL instructors, so I guess we could give some safety classes to individuals or groups that requested them.
The question that I have is would there be a substantial benefit to going through the NRA Instructor Course and offering their class. I know the NRA logo or designation will attract some people that would not necessarily be interested in just the "Gun Safety Course". My understanding is that if you do the NRA course it has to follow the NRA guidelines pretty strictly, and there isn't much room for variance.
I will have to travel a pretty good distance to do one of these classes, which during the late summer/fall that really isn't a problem since that is our slow time of year. The wife doesn't think she is interested in doing this particular course, but we will have to see if I can convince her otherwise if I decide to go.
So, all you NRA instructors give me some input please.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Well, being an NRA instructor my favorite part is that it provides an easy structure to your classes. And while there is a good bit of institutional control over the courses, there is still freedom in how it is taught. I just taught a Basic Pistol class a couple of weeks ago and I think that it is a really good and helpful class for beginners. So for my money the NRA instructor certification was worth it. :) I got HFS, Basic Pistol, Personal Protection in the Home, and Range Safety Officer.
