Weapons retention poll Distance is: Your friend Vs. Not so much

    Face to face

You are face to face with BG (interview distance). Your hand is on your weapon, but you have not cleared leather. BG goes for your weapon. Your response is...

If you are LEO, please say so.

I have always contended that distance is your friend... If you can push the BG away and go for your weapon, you have bought the time to do so by pushing him away ... distance = time.

On re-thinking that, I'm not so sure... His hand or hands is/are occupied... You are at closer than bad-breath distance... do you strike him in a manner that will incapacitate him or, do you just shove him away?

I understand that there are retention holsters... many use them... many do not... if the retention holster figures into your decision, please state that.

Within hand-to-hand range, I likely won't be going for my gun. With that said, how I respond to an attempted gun grab will be determined by the perpetrator's position.

Put distance between me and perp, then draw and fire. Distance is your friend. Perp is not expecting rapid movement away, much less a drawn gun with verbal commands. Voted None of the above.

My training is to close to engage. Pushing an adversary away not only allows them the clearance to draw a weapon, but also gives them the visibility to see you draw yours. I prefer to slam into them, disorient them, and while doing so, both block their view, and draw my weapon, firing pioint blank from retention where they don't get the chance to see it and attempt to defend themselves. 5 or 6 rounds to the torso will stop most threats.

If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

I carry a ka bar TDI on my left side. If the BG goes for my gun, he will get the TDI....

His threat is now deadly, and you are going to elbow him in the face?

If the gun-grab is from behind you, that might not be such a good plan.

Not letting the BG getting that close in the first place would be my first objective.
