    Open "gym" for shooting

Well...shot at my first "match" event for USPSA at a local gun club here in the Dayton, OH area: Miamisburg Sportsmen's Club. They have kind of an open gym/range on Monday nights and so I went with my brother, bro-in-law, and family friend...what a blast! So much different than the static shooting I've been doing at another indoor range here in town (Vandalia Range and Armory...which is awesome by the way). The indoor static/stand still shoot down range is great for getting to know your gun, work on stance, trigger, breathing, and all of the other fundamentals that are so important to shooting. But this was a different caliber to shoot...so much fun. What I loved about it is that it that it to took engaging my mind and body to the next level when it comes to shooting. Walking the course, thinking about strategy, focusing on safety, dropping mags, transitioning stages all the while competing for speed and accuracy...gave "range time" a lot more real life feel.

I just used my stock M&P Full Size 9mm so I shot in (I think) the Minimum/Production division...don't quote me on that, but I think that sounds about right. But in our group of 8 shooters we had Open division shooters (crazy fast and accurate) to Iron Sights using stocked pro models to n00bs like me. Some seriously amazing athletes!

One other things this practice match taught me was...don't judge a book by it's cover. By this I mean that a couple of shooters there were some, well let's say, "huskier" dudes. They were big boys. I thought to my self...they've got nice firearms and gear, but really...how fast can they be? Two words: lightning fast! Wow...they were awesome! Needless to say I was ashamed of my judgement...they totally kicked my backside all over the range.

Really a great time...can't encourage you enough to find a range like this in your area and give it a try. It'll give you a whole new feel for shooting.

Hey, it was an eye-opener, no?

Even at my low-intensity, club-level steel matches, there are some unlikely-looking folks of both genders who will clean your clock with their shooting abilities! Check out some of the "Tuesday Night Steel" You Tube videos for Rio Salado range, especially the wheelgunners.

Stepping up from punching paper to the action games is a major shift for most shooters. I don't kid myself about winning any prizes, but within a couple of years I've progressed up three levels and I'm far from done. As long as you understand the differences between the game and the street, the added element of competition is really worthwhile for honing the shooting skills.

I may have to make it by there and try. They do it every Monday night?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

The first time I shot steel, there was a 17 year old girl (just turned 17) there. She didn't even come up to my shoulder. She was blinding fast, and accurate as you can get. She was scary good.

    Video games do that.

Shooting steel is SO much fun! Shooting steel while on the run is a real challenge.

Our local group of shooters is mostly old geezers, so their version is more "shooting while slowly strolling......." but it still beats standing in one spot and aiming for paper!
Getting old was not on my list of "things to do" in the Golden Years!
