Hey, Vic. Welcome to the world of carrying concealed for your own defense. Congrats!
I would strongly recommend to purchases:
- The book In The Gravest Extreme, by Massad Ayoob.
- The LFI-1 course offered by the Lethal Force Institute, entitled The Judicious Use Of Deadly Force.
The book is invaluable. It was originally published in 1980, so it is a little dated, but all the material is first-rate and applicable to those who choose to carry in their own defense.
The LFI course is, essentially, the book put into practice. It's a four-day seminar with Massad Ayoob himself. He tours around the country each year offering this course. There is one coming up in Connecticut, in October. Uncertain whether it's full or not. Highly recommended.
Another thing to do might be to hook up with your local Sheriff, then ask whether any of his deputies do any training of civilians. Typically, larger police/sheriff organizations have a solid group of folks with a wide range of skills and experience who can offer a world of knowledge to you. It also helps you get to know the fine folks who are in your community helping to maintain the peace, as well as introducing yourself to one or more of them. All of that's to the good.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.

thats a good idea about my local sherrif,,,will go there on thursday to find out some more,,
The only course I have taken is a gunsite offsite in MA but here are some school links that I have stumbled across in the last few months. I don't know a whole lot about them but maybe there might be something useful there. You might want to also ask around at local gun clubs they may be able to point you to some good local courses.
