Is it just recommended to do the front dot..... or should the rear sights also be done.......... so as not to have any distraction there either.

Blacking a sight is a target technique , it has little if any use for self defense. My absolute favorite for a self defense gun is to have a tritium front sight and a non glow back , I just dont care for it enough to go to the expense and effort to change out the back sights to standard on the pistols i get that have the full load .
Make sure you get full value out of today , Do something worthwhile, because what you do today will cost you one day off the rest of your life .

It makes more sense to black out the rear sight since this will make the front sight stand out more.
    An old trick, BTW.

I'd use something NON permanent in nature first so you can see if you like the sights that way, BEFORE ruining the night or dot sights with a permanent marker.

Exactly. An example of things really being bad when you need something, and don't have it...

I have black rear sights and a tritium from sight on my guns. Allows my eye to get to the front sight with a minimum of delay. At the risk of going off topic.......... a company called Ameriglo makes a sight set for the Glock called the operator. It is the std 3 dot set but there are no white outlines on the rear sight. The front has the white outlin. In the day, it appears to be a plain black sight. In low light, the dots glow. The front sight blade is a bit thinner and the rear notch is a bit bigger. Just put them on and like them so far. They seem to be a bit faster (for me) than the reg 3 dot. They're made in the USA and they are made of metal.
