    Tactical rifle shooting?

After college (1.5 years) i plan on getting involved in private security/secuirty consulting. I'm at the bottom of the food chain right now (un-armed security guard, which will change feb 15th)... well i have a collapsable batton for right now. I joined IDPA to get better at defensive pistol tactics, but is there any kind of sport where i use a tacticle rife/shotgun (such as an AR-15) AND pistol in the same event, as i believe this will be more prevelent in my future career.

The only "discipline" I know is a homegrown and very localized event down here in SoFla. It is the South Florida Defensive Carbine Club created by a local nutjob/buddy and it is sort-of IDPA for defensive rifles. Some of the stages may have a transition to or from handgun.

It is a work in progress and one of the must fun-filled shooting I ever had.
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

From experience I can tell you that your not going to gain the requisite skill sets by simply taking a couple of Saturday afternoon carbine matches as a substitute for real world training. Sure, competition has it's merits, but where are you going to learn the skills required to compete competitively with those that have been formerly and properly trained ? Personally I don't want to be in the same building with a security guard that has not been formely trained with the his pistol and or carbine or shotgun. Think about it, and it's liabilities.

I would strongly suggest finding a tactical carbine and pistol course. My rec's for instuctors are Larry Vickers of Vickers Tactical and Paul Howe, owner and instuctor of CSAT (Combat Shooting and Tactics) Jeff Gonzales with Tricon (Trident Concepts) is also highly recommended. You may need to travel to find these course offered by these men. This will include coining up for lodging and meals and travel expenses, but if you want to trained by the best, your life is worth giving up more than just the cost of ammo and an entry fee into a carbine competition.

All three of the above mentioned names are proven combat veteran with Army Special Forces and Delta. Both Larry Vickers and Paul Howe served with Army Special Forces and both with Delta. Both have been there and done that and have more practical application experience than anyone in the business of tactical training. Jeff Gonzalez is a former member of the Naval Special Warfare Group/SEALs and is also a decorated veteran and he's been there and done that also. You'll find their course of instruction to be challenging and rewarding. You'll be asked to walk, crawl, and run through their courses but you'll come out of it having stepped up the learning curve very quickly. You'll also be able to document your training with your department. This will aid greatly if your ever faced with a civil suit for damages should you be forced to engage during your career. I would suggest taking course from all three. After your first course and with that documentation you can move to the advanced course of instuction with another or the same instuctor.

Trust me, you'll learn as much about combative mindset as you will in improving your reaction times and consistant accuracy with both the pistol and carbine rifle.

    Good Luck.

skygood is right on track. IDPA or IPSC have their place and it is fun. But it is still a game. You should really look into a school. The guys that skygod mentioned travel around often so you might find one in your area. The important thing is to get some real world training.

I don't remember which forum but there is a tactical rifle organization like IDPA that was recently started up. It might have been on either The Firing Line, Glocktalk, or the Concealed Carry forum. If I run across it again I'll post a link.
