I am now an IDPA junkie........
Attended my beginner class today.
The instructor was excellent.
I was in a classroom for over three hours before we hit the range. I shot a SSP, Glock 17.
Out of the 12 shooters, I had the fastest time and a perfect score....twice.
I am now hooked! I never did this well at anything before.
This hobby is now going to consume all of my free time.
Anyone else here shoot IDPA?????

I just shot IDPA for the first time today also. It was great fun, though I don't think I did as well as you did. (Honestly I didn't really pay much attention to my score.) It was nice to get out with others who enjoy the shooting sports and a way to get some training and trigger time with your carry gun. Lots of fun and I know I'll be doing it again!

I shoot IDPA tho often miss shoots because of biking or flying!!!
It's great but I am sure not in the top class - added to which as we run quite laid back shoots at the club in point, I do tend to shoot as me vs me - making the most of the practice in various aspects. Not out to score points only - practice counts for more.
It can tho as I know be addictive!!

I started shooting IDPA in February. It is addicting and I've been shooting 6-7 matches a month.
I have started to cool on it a bit though and am taking two weeks off to to think about it.
It's a lot of fun but for something that's supposed to be a run what ya brung deal, I sure have been spending a lot of money on it.

I did my first pistol shoot Sunday. It was an IPSC event. Had a great time and learned a lot about what I need to practice on. Looking for some IDPA close to home but not having much luck.

I was the first competitor in the FIRST ever IDPA sanctioned match to be held east of the Mississippi River in 1997. Think it was January. I ran the course with JHP 9mm in a Browning Hi-Power IIRC. I became a certifed Safety Officer shortly thereafter.
I've been shooting IDPA for lessee....nine years? Steadily about once a month sometimes two or three times a month. You'd think I'd have already reached MASTER status like most of my friends, right? Marksman: ESP, SSP and CDP. IDPA is a GAME. It's a game based on HUNDRETHS of a second. CDP Master classification is 91.76 seconds (or less) for 90 rds fired. SSP Master is 98.82 seconds (or less). I fired my most recent qualifier last Saturday in the Florida keys. At least I'm consistent. Don't get wrapped up in the IDPA GAME. I'm consistent at marksman because I concentrate on tactics (zero procedurals) and accuracy. But then speed MUST suffer and I'm okay with that. Still I was moaning to our club President and he made the comment that in his opinion I wasn't the same shooter who ran that course all those years ago. He said I was so much better but I was also nine years older. Eyes have a tougher time picking up the front sight and so I try even harder to take my time and make the shot.....you have to vary your training.

I am taking our "black badge" course for IPSC, teaches safety, the IPSC rules, holster work and basics, three nights of 4 hrs each and about 400 rds. Did one open shoot already and had lots of fun. Been doing a thing called "Skills & Drills" night once a month, teaches the basic skills required for the Action shooting games and their is a practice IDPA night every Sunday also, I would do more but I am spending all my play money on bullets.
Note to self: Win lottery, retire and play with guns!

Static Range Drills
by Shay Ben-David
Practice session - 300 Rounds*
Exercise #1
50 rounds - 25 yards - Draw and fire 2 shots. Your objective is to shoot as fast as possible but still get A zone hits. Do a tactical reload before reholstering to practice this maneuver as well.
Exercise #2
50 rounds - 7 yards - Draw and fire 6 shots into A zone as fast as possible (under 3 seconds is a good time). Keep practicing your tactical reloads.
Exercise #3
50 rounds - 10 yards - Load 3 rounds into each magazine. Draw and fire 2 shots to the body and 1 to the head, perform a tactical reload or reload with retention and fire 2 more shots to the body and 1 to the head. This drill works on transition from a bigger “aggressive target” to a smaller “accurate shot” type target.
Exercise #4
50 rounds - 7 yards - Put 2 targets out. Load 4 rounds into each magazine. Draw and fire 2 shots at each target, perform a slide lock reload and engage each target again with 2 shots.
Exercise #5
40 rounds - 7 yards - Start with gun in weak (support) hand at low-ready. On the signal, raise the gun and fire 2 shots.
Exercise #6
50 rounds - 7 yards - Draw and fire 2 shots with your strong hand only.
Exercise #7
10 rounds - 25 yards - Fire 10 rounds for bull's-eye. Take your time and make each shot count. Concentrate on breathing, trigger control, and sight alignment.
*If you are pressed for time and/or ammo money like most of us, you may also divide each required round count into.

Thanks for the practice suggestions, ExSoldier -- I printed 'em out & will try some of them next time at the range. Not allowed to draw at this range, but I can still make good use of the exercises.

Received the results from the match this past weekend. I finished 12 out of a total of 30, which isn't bad considering it was my first time. I finished second on one stage, no worse than 12th on three others but like 22 and 26 on two more. Not very consistent. One stage involved shooting with the weak hand unsuported and I really sucked on that one. To me this is one of the strengths of IDPA, pointing out what I need to work on. I too don't try to get too caught up in the "game" aspect. I use the same gun, holster and carry method that I do every day. Some folks there didn't really seemed to worried about the "concealed" aspect of life, if they had tried to carry in the same manner they were shooting on that day they would have been made by blind old ladies. lol I intend to try and stay focused on improving skills like moving while shooting, weak hand shooting like mentioned and other things that will hopefully help in the sad event of a real world encounter with the bad guys.
But all in all it was a fun day in the sun with a gun!
