Just checked on You Tube. The guy was lighting matches and popping balloons with it. Then he added that it stopped working the next day. Pity, I was jazzed.

    Oh man...

    Oh yes, oh man...

Easy dude... Oh man... I really want one...

    Must convince the Wife...

I think I'll wait until the Beta model comes out with no bugs. Of course, by then they'll be illegal.

That which does not kill us leaves us broken and bleeding...

Donít mess with the guy who can barely stand up. His remaining options for self-defense don't include your survival.

Trust me, you don't want one of these things.

A class 4 laser isn't really something anyone needs outside a lab. One slip with this thing and someone is blinded. A close reflection from a white surface is sufficient to cause nearly instant, irreversible injury to the eye.

Lasers can be fun toys - in the milliwatt range. This thing is hundreds of times more powerful, and the wavelength of the light makes it even more hazardous.

Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

The YouTube vids I could find were for the SpyderIII green lasers, which have much lower outputs than the one in the Gizmodo article.

    That's a 75 ms green laser.

The new blue one is 13 times more powerful, plus the wavelength is different.

You see the green reflective flare when he turns the 75 mw laser on the match in the beginning of the video? If that were from the blue 1000mw laser, it would be the last thing an unshielded human eye ever saw.

Neat toy; but what scares me is the people who will buy this having no idea what it actually is or is capable of. It it is what the article says it is, this is no laser pointer, and I see people using it as one.
