Angry OK......I give up. Going back to freehand.

So I spent almost an hour last night trying to touch up the edge on my Tempest with the Lansky. Even used the magic marker trick. Just couldn't get an edge on it to my liking.

I used to do all my sharpening freehand on a large stone, so I figured what the heck.......I turned the Lansky stones over and laid the back of them on the table so the stone part was up. After only 15 or 20 swipes on both sides of the blade with the medium and fine stones, I had a great edge.

Think I will pack up the Lansky and dig out my old Arkansas stone set.

    Thanks for letting me rant.

Yeah, That is kind of like me and electric can openers. The old style mechanical types work just fine.

I touch them up that way with the fine diamond stone and once you get the edge rough but very sharp touch it up with the blue sapphire stone, it will polish the rough edges out nicely.

If they need a real sharpening though, I use the full Lansky kit rods and all. The other night I was so frustrated with an old Kbar fighting knife I have as a display sitting upstairs next to some of my old USMC pictures from the Gulf War the frustration was the blade was dull and I spent two hours trying to get just a halfway not razor sharp edge on it with no success. I finally broke out the round nose sandpaper rock bit and put it on my dremmel tool. Sparks were flying but within less than thirty I had a shinny sharp edge enough for display on my KBar.

Hmm... did you make sure the guide rods lay flat with the hones when you set them on a table or stovetop? If not, you will be constantly changing the honing angle when you switch between hones which defeats the whole purpose of the Lansky system.
