Decided that he wants a Spyderco assisted-open for Christmas!
He asked for it totally out of the blue. Apparently old dogs do learn new tricks.

It's possible that I missed a recent release, but as far as I know, Spyderco doesn't make any assisted openers. Benchmade has some nice ones, though.
Age is just a number, it's the heart and spirit that is a true indicator of age.
What's your budget?

Budget not an issue. Although he said he wanted the same as mine which is a low-end Tenacious G10. He saw me dig out a piece of line wrapped around the clutch of his chainsaw with it, and still be able to shave the hairs off the back of my hand afterward, and suddenly had knife-envy.

Get him a knife and a gun...he carried YOU for many years, and he's probably JUST not paying off the loans for your keep.
Make him happy and safe, you owe him that much. You won't be able to do that when he's gone.OMO
"That I cannot do."
"Give this to, uh, Clemenza. I want reliable people, people who aren't going to be carried away. After all we're not murderers in spite of what this undertaker thinks."

Wow - a lot of heavy-handed advice there. I'm not sure how this thread drifted into a suspicion that I was neglecting him. Allow me to put your mind at ease.
- He has more guns than he knows what to do with. He has very little interest in guns these days.
- He has no loans to pay off. In fact, he's quite wealthy. We usually don't get presents for each other and instead donate to charity. What we do have, we tend to live simply with. You'd never know he was rich by looking at him. This is what made this gift request so special to me.
- I can also assure you that he doesn't want some $500 knife. As stated previously, he said he wanted one like mine.
- I retired from a lucrative career, moved here to Mayberry and built my home next door to my parents so that I could take care of them and cherish these last years. My dad was the best man at my wedding and continues to be my best friend.
The purpose of this thread was simply to share the joy of a simple request from a man who's never stopped learning.
