    Nice old carved whalebone knife

My grandmother passed away in March of last year, and in the will, one of the items my brother received was this beautiful old knife. Our grandparents collected many different kinds of antiques, including carved whalebone and scrimshaw. It's around 8" sheathed. I don't know a lot about the piece, so any information is welcome!

(For some odd reason my image attachments are not working, so please stand by!)

I'm trying to use the Attach Files option and it appeared to upload, but didn't. I tried twice. I'm going to try to add it to the Member's Gallery and link from that... ta-dah! That worked.

    Betty-
I have a set of Japanese wakazashi carved from ivory or bone around 1880, and the carvings are similiar. Mine have very good detail, and If I had a camera, and knew how to use it, I would send pictures. Looks like it could be Japanese from the turn of the century(the last one).

    Betty,

Knives like that one given your brother really get my interest up. It's a real piece of history.

See the bone? It's drying out from age. To keep it from further deteriorating:

Have your brother soak the whole thing in mineral oil for a few days, wipe it down and then try to keep it from getting temperature and humidity swings.

I have an 8 pound block of ancient wooly mammouth ivory that requires it to be soaked in mineral oil as suggested once a year so the cracks that it has don't get bigger.

Thanks for the tip! I'll tell him that - we sure don't want that piece of history to crack away.
