I would definitely recommend going with a larger blade for camping or general outdoor use. Otherwise a hatchet would be a must for firewood or shelter building.
I carry a fullsize Ka-Bar (7" blade) When I go out in the woods. The thing can take a beating and keep performing! I think a tanto blade may prove more sturdy at prying as well.
I am very impressed with Cold Steel Knives and am currently researching the best model to add to my collection.
