Any sugestions for what a 15 year old girl can carry for defense?
My daughter can start taking classes at the local university early. Although she will be taken to and from school.... while she's there, she will be unsupervised.
I am not sold on the idea, but would be more inclined if she were able to carry pepper spray. I see everywhere that you have to be 18 to purchase OC, but can't find info on age restrictions for carrying.
Also any other suggestions are welcome.
I am not in the least bit sure of age legalities but - have to say IMO more imporant than any defensive tool is the mindset and skill to use it. Plus of course the ability to be very situationally aware.
This latter is perhaps the most important thing to build with a youngster.
I am thinking that maybe a sizeable flashlight could be a useful and legitimate ''tool'' to have on hand, plus a good bit of instruction from Dad!
If your concern is her walking between the vehicle and the class, contact the university and talk to them about escort service. It's a free service that most universities provide free of charge.Quote:

Check your state laws on this.
For instance, MA is bass-ackwards but OC is considered "ammo" by law here and thus forbidden on any school (including college) property by any but LEOs. In fact you need a permit to possess OC in this state!
I doubt that it is anything like that in TX, but since the genesis of this (in MA and the Fed law on guns on school property) was the Texas Tower Shooting back in 1966, I have no idea what TX law might be like in this regard.

Not to be funny but in alot of rape prevention classes they teach women to scream "FIRE!!" when being attacked.

Send her to a "good" self defense class and teach her how to use an

Try a mini-Maglight. Even at 80lbs I becha, she can cause some damage, if its used properly. The light w/h OC (if legal) would make a nice combo.

Size helps in unarmed combat, but a properly trained 80 lb woman can put someone on the ground pretty quick (I learned this the hard way when sparring once upon a time). If there is someone who can teach her escrima (stick fighting), that's another option that does not rely on size or carrying a baseball bat. The latest generation of Tasers are very effective, if a little pricey - but that may get back to what is legal for a 15 year old to carry on University grounds.
It's 14 years old here in WA, with parental consent. OC is considered a "dangerous weapon", and as such, is prohibited on school grounds (high school and below) I am not sure about colleges and universities.

My daughter has been carrying OC since she was sixteen and to tell you the truth never checked the law on it. She is responsible and also knows how to use a gun properly. She keeps OC with her at all times. She will get a CCW when she turns 18 too.

As a grad student that works A LOT of late nights, I can identify with this problem a little. I also carry a gun, so I'm a bit removed, but may still be able to provide a little advice. More than anything your daughter needs to develop great environmental awareness skills. Even though I am a fairly big guy that can handle myself fairly well, it still bothers me to walk alone at nite on a campus as big as mine. And why I reccommend this is for three reasons:
1. The light is bright enough for her to temporarily blind someone long enough to have a chance to run away
2. The bezel is crenellated so that if she does have to strike, a eye shot, or face shot, would be painful
3. Flashlights are useful tools that will help her increase her situational awareness, as well as identify possible threats before they are close enough to harm her, and once again run away

Many schools and universities have their own lists of prohibited weapons that are not allowed on campus or school property regardless of what the State laws read. Mace and OC Spray is usually on that list. I just checked 3 university web sites in TX and OC is on their list of No No items.
Get her in a self defense class! There are many options for her in a attack, regardless of her size. A physical confrontation is 90% mental and 10% physical! I have a 19 year old girl that weighs a whole 100 lbs. and she can well defend herself against whoever! I started training her at about age 6 and still going. I too am small framed, it's not so much the power in a strike but the placement that counts as well as the mindset and determination to win.
