I watched a demo of cane fighting once and it was pretty amazing stuff. Just a plain old crook top cane like you're describing can be very effective. Sword canes are illegal in a whole lot of places so be carefull and check the laws before getting one.

I use my Irish Blackthorn Stick, often called a Shilleligh. For hundreds of years they have been a formidable weapon and very beautiful as well.

I don't need a sword cane...I've got a Glock...

If you use a cane anyway though a sword in it wouldn't be a bad idea (if it's legal). Kind of a backup.

You should get one of the better cane combatives DVDs..you would be surprised how incredibly easy it is for someone with very little training to use a crook top cane to put an assailant on their butt with very few moves.
This is a subject very close to my heart since I was hurt in January 2005.

Personally, I lean more toward the short-stick material as taught by people like W.E. Fairbairn or John Styers. It seems to be more intuitive and effective than the "cane techniques" that I've seen. That said, I'll admit that my only experience with martial-arts style cane technique has been through books and video clips...I've never bought any of the tapes.

I've had one of these for years. An excellent cane for when needed and I can carry anywhere, even on a plan.
