On September 22-23 I ran the Defensive Knife Course here in Los Angeles. It was a small course with 5 students, but what this group lacked in numbers, it made up in the intensity of the drills that we ran.
First off, I want to thank the students for their dedication to safety and for the consideration for their training partners that they brought to this class. All of you had your head in the game for both days and all of you worked very hard to make the material your own. It was an outstanding class and I hope to train again with you soon when we start our training group in November .
The course took us through the basics: the characteristics of a solid fighting knife, the stopping power that we are looking for and how we target an attacker to achieve that.
From there on forward, every piece of theory was immediately followed by drills. We started looking at the use of the defensive knife by categorising attacks by the angle they come from and developing appropriate responses.
This took us through day one.
Day two began with the introduction of our good training friend "porkman".
How much damage can a swipe with a dinky 3.25" blade do? A LOT!
What happens if we can drop our entire weight into a pressure cut?
Things get REAL ugly for the thug on the receiving end!
So does a swipe with a pocket sword....
After this show and tell of the devastation that our knives can inflict, we worked drills for the rest of the day. This covered defences with the knife and without.
It was a great course to teach and as said before, I hope to see all of you in November in Redlands to keep honing our skills!
