    AK 47 Bayonet

Sitting around the house with not much to do, I thought I sharpen the bayonet to my AK. Have others sharpen their bayonet to thier rifles? It is ground only on one side but I been work with it with a wet stone on both sides. It is taking a lot of work since it is really dul. Is this the wrong way to sharpen my bayonet? Will it keep its edge? Any advice will be appreciated. I'm hoping this is not a stupid thread.

Yeah, much like the old bayonets, the AK is made to make a HOLE, not a clean incision that will close nicely on its own.

I only have two with no real high dollar collector value.
One is a West German made for Colt Industries & another is an original IMI Israeli Military Industries. They fit my Galil rifles but, they are basically unused. I just carefully honed the existing edges.

For as much trench warfare as I'll probably ever be doing (which is likely nill) - I keep mine quite SHARP but just with the simple strong original basic double bevel.
In other words - main focus on a factory strong, even, but, still keen edge.

100% correct, we were always told specificly NOT to sharpen our bayonets, just make sure it has a good point.

Interesting enough the term KA-BAR is actually Knife Associcted w/ Browning AutoMatic Rifle, since the BARs had no bayonet lug, and were too heavy for stabbing, so they issued combat knives to the BAR gunners to use if needed, those were to be sharpened do to the difference in use. Just a little knife history thrown in there...

I actually sharpened mine using a Spyderco Tri-angle sharpener and gotten above decent results. If fact, I sometimes carry mine as a fixed blade ccw. I once read an article I do beleive from ak47bayonets.com that it also depends on the make and year of your bayonet. The make/year will determine what type of steel that was used in the manufacturing process of your blade.
