If you carry a gun - why a knife?

Just curious why you would carry a knife if you also carry a gun. Purely backup? Another weapon if you lose the gun? Would you ever use the knife first? It would still fall under the same category of deadly weapon right? Just gathering information...

To me a knife is more a tool then a defensive weapon. It has uses beyond deadly force. However a knife in a pinch could be a defensive weapon.

Guns can't cut rope as neatly, nor cardboard or tape. It's nice to have a manual item, when a mechanical one is the primary. Won't always have the time or distance to draw. And it's really nice to have an option for the weak-hand, in the case the strong-hand is taken out.

Why does a mechanic have several different types of 9/16 wrenches? Be it a gun or knife it is just a tool you are the weapon. What you carry is nothing more than tools. You may need to cut a seat belt or a piece of rope or open a package. The gun wouldn't be very effective as a tool for those jobs.

Properly used an edged weapon can be very useful.

    Just my thoughts.

I tried cleaning my fingernails once with my 1911. It didn't work very well.
I carry a gun, because a Cop is too heavy.

Might be a time when you need your knife as with a tactical light. Tools to be used when needed. Dont want to be caught in the dark when you need a light to see to cut or shoot your way out of a situation.

The last time I tried to open a package with a gun I ruined $300 worth of cigars!

I have carried a knife with me all my life. I pack it in the checked baggage when I fly. Only place I've gone w/o one is on a cruise ship and I felt totally naked. Worse than w/o my firearm. So many things you whip a knife out for that you never think about until you don't have it.

If you carry a gun - why a knife?

Because it's really hard to pick food out of your teeth with a gun. Well, actually it's easy, but painful replacing the teeth.
