    SOG or Gerber

I see a lot of advertisements for SOG and for Gerber and I know nothing about knives.

I am looking for a reasonable priced folding knife that will hold an edge and that will not fall apart or break.

Which of the brands do you prefer? Yes, I know it is opinion only, but the opinions of those who know more about this than I do, matter to me.

SOG is a quality knife with a good blade. Gerber makes decent knives as well but to me their blades arent the best out there. I love CRKT knives, kershaw and spyderco are also a couple more you may want to look at. If it were me I would go with CRKT.

    Of the 2 mentioned, Gerber.

I'm a Benchmade fan myself but own multi-tools by both and a small folder by Gerber...think it's a Paraframe.

I have both and depending on what you are intending to use it for dictates which is the best choice. SOG Trident for EDC and fishing, Gerber Bear Gryll's Folder (the big one) for camping, hiking and other outdoor stuff besides fishing. Many times I carry both when doing outdoor stuff.

Both are inexpensive enough so that you can buy one of each.

    SOG.

What is a "reasonable" price for you?

Reasonable varies from individual to individual.

Between the two, another one for SOG. Mine came sharp enough to shave the hair on my arm - I tested it - and it has held the edge well.

I do have a Gerber multi-tool that has been a very serviceable as well, I just don't think it is quite as good.

SOG..... the gerbers nowadays are just not in the same league as a quality knife. I personally love CRKT knives, or anything benchmade. If you want a high qaulity trouble free knoife, spend the money once. I have had the same benchmade griptillian for 7 yrs......

I've had many of both and broke many of both. with that said the folder made by gerber called ar 3.00 is the best I've had out of both companies. Going strong after 3 years of edc (although I'm in the market for a new one thanks to experimenting with an electrical sharpener). My favorite aspect of that knife is the handle which is not made of plastic like many folders today.

with all that said I am debating the kabar Dozier because the blade is generally better made. aus 8 steel compared to the typical folder in this price range which is typically made with 440. The Dozier will also run you about $20 compared tot he ar 3.00 at about $30. However the Dozier does have a plastic handle and I'm unsure of how I feel about it.

Anyway back to your original question, Gerber knives over SOG.

I kind of prefer the Gerber of the SOG personally. I have several of the Gerber Gators that have a shaving edge after working them on a Norton India Stone. Their actions are good and the price is generally low.

Since there has been mention of multi tools on here I suppose I should mention this. Do not get a gerber or sog multi tool. During my military days I've had 2 of each (model eludes me atm) and I've broken the pliers on all 4, sog being the worse of the bunch. Yes the blade was razor sharp but paper thin. broke a blade on one of them.

If it is a multi tool you want, go with leathermen. To this day not an issue doing tasks that the others failed to do.

Agreed....the Leatherman is a far better multi-tool than any other I have seen.

I have a skeletonized folding [Tanto] CRKT and love it. I have had it for over 10 years. It holds an edge well and is very dependable.

I've had better experiences with SOG than Gerber myself, but currently I'm carrying a CRKT Triumph and it's my favorite so far.

I've had a SOG Aegis in my pocket for years now and have never had a problem. $65-75 I think. I like the fat belly blade. Holds an edge for a long time. I don't baby it and it still locks up pretty tight.
