Who needs guns anymore? Check THIS out

alright, its still pretty far off, but imagine a future weapon like this, and then answer this question: since most encounters happen within 21 feet (that magical number I keep hearing bandied about), if this technology was available, would you prefer it over your current EDC?

I know, sounds like a bunch of ten year olds sitting around a campfire playing what-if games, but after these types of discoveries, I'm starting to think that in my lifetime (next forty years, let's say) this will become a viable question. So what do you think?

Trust me, if this "weapon" is actually a beam of high energy photons (i.e. gamma rays (from the nucleus) or x-rays (from the electron shell)), it's got a lot longer range than 21 feet. And talk about worrying about what's beyond your target...it's probably beyond your line of sight that you need to worry about. Lots of potential for collateral damage, yourself included. Though a lead lined body suit and jock strap may help you some.

It is fun to think about though.

It would be handy in the shop, and more fun than a plasma cutter.

This laser looks like it removes grease, rust, and paint well. The company sells various models, including a backpack model that looks remarkably like a Ghostbuster's proton Pack.

21 feet is the effective range that an attacker can use a bladed weapon, not a defender (we'll just classify it as a bladed weapon for the purpose of this discussion). It's the distance someone can rush you before you can pull a gun (approximately anyway). If you think stand your ground laws are controversial, imagine the "rush someone in self defense" laws. So that's a "no" from me. I'd stick with a ranged weapon. Though I'd keep a lightsaber on me as a backup for sure :)

More importantly though, that sort of technology could one day turn into force fields. Now THAT is a self defense upgrade.

I think I'd rather have a phaser. No mess to clean up.

Same here. I'll take a Phaser in the 40 Megawatt range.
Firing a suppressed is on my Bucket List.

I'm just a spoke in the wheel but not a big deal.

Only if I can deflect bullets back at the shooter. However, I suspect that this would simply melt the bullet as it passed through, leaving me struck with a copper jacket filled with molten lead instead of solid lead, which is hardly an improvement.
"Yet this government never of itself furthered any enterprise, but by the alacrity with which it got out of the way... The character inherent in the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way."

Not as clumsy or random as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.
