Curious If Anyone Here Has Actually Used A Knife In Self Defense.

    Hi all,
Has anyone here ever used a knife in self defense? (Won't ask in other direction!)
I ask because I have trained in various disciplines and in 35 years as LEO, with over 12 of them in Plainclothes, I never used a knife other than in cutting a seatbelt on an accident scene. So I would be very interested in any experiences anyone might wish to share here. If you are armed with a gun as I was, a determined attacker can get in range very quickly, which is why Officers shoot perpetrators advancing on them with knives! (And get accused of excessive force by the public!) But to see two persons going at each other with knives is uncommon to say the least, and to defend against a gun with a knife is almost impossible, if the guntoting individual is in any meaningful way, experienced. Again, just curious.
    Thanks for any input,
    Unkei

I use a knife to defend myself from steaks on a regular basis. Thick, juicy, rare steaks. Mmmmmmmmmh steaky steak steak.

Once but only against a medium sized dog and nothing came of it. Seen it coming from a distance but it was only 40lbs or so. Meaner than hell and could prob do some damage but still didn't feel justified drawing my pistol as I didn't feel my life was in danger. Out it came, dog held his ground and soon after the owner came along. Owner never even saw the blade. Not sure if this qualifies but thought I'd share anyway

I have been trained with them , but never used. I have however been stabled twice; it was a crazy patient in a hospital while trying to get him under control. Honestly I would have rather been shot. They bleed a lot can do more damage than a handgun. Once in the thigh and once in the lower abdomen. Nothing hit and just needed some sewing up.

I have never pulled my knife and I really dont want to. I dont train in knife fighting, and for me it is a last ditch end of the world option, but better than a pointy stick.

I do however know first hand the damage a sharp knife can do.... I managed to stab myself in the bottom of the forearm with a small (1 1/2 blade) yet incredibly sharp pocket knife while working on the farm. That short blade penetrated fully into my arm and left a 1 1/4 inch hole even though it was less than 1/2 inch wide. I had fat, muscle and tissue hanging out, but minimal blood. 2 minor surgeries to repair damaged tendon and 13 stitches later I was good to go.....

I had a friend who though he would try to defend himself with a knife. He didn't have a gun. For some here, this is a repeat story, so bear with me.

Matt was walking home from work, 2:30 am, dead of winter windchill -10 or lower. He's wearing carhart coat over sweatshirt, gloves and everything (it's a 1+ mile walk, stupid IMO). Heard a car coming from his left as he crosses an intersection, and it is slowing. It is now behind and parallel to him (he's on sidewalk) he suspects trouble, gets into his hand and opens a small folder which was in his coat pocket. He is carrying a small lunch box cooler. The knife is open and in his other gloved hand. As his neck hairs raise, he turns around.

Within bad breath distance, stands a youth (17-18) with a kitchen knife. "Gimme your money." Matt resisted.. "I ain't givin' you nothin'" tries to swing lunch box... kid kicks it. Then Matt is blindsided and cold cocked to the side of the head by one of the 2 others from the car.

Matt was on all fours. He was stabbed twice, kicked, beaten, and left for dead. He never let go of his knife.

The carhart coat and other layers kept the knife point from going all the way through his body from the rear, the knife nicked the liver and/or kidney and cut a rib. He was also stabbed in the butt. He survived, no stitches, no surgery. And got a gun permit... But he still can't carry to or from work because we don't have a "parking lot law." He sometimes still walks (which is still stupid, IMO).

The only thing that saved him from more damage or death, was the fact that it occurred in front of an occupied house with decent people that heard the commotion and his yells for help. They called the cops, an ambulance, and even told the attackers they had done so from their porch, and told the BGs the cops were on the way... The attackers didn't stop right away, even so. When the attackers left, the residents took Matt inside and gave him a blanket. The neighborhood was mostly vacated due to the floods of 2008. Matt was very lucky that night.

He never let go of the knife. He never used it.

The BGs were caught. They are in jail for at least 7 years.
    Rats!
    It could be worse!
    I suppose

There was one case I heard of in Kentucky many years back in which a KSP Trooper used a neck knife to fillet a BG who had charged him. If I recall correctly they were in a gun battle and when the trooper was reloading the BG rushed because he himself had run dry and was trying to take the troopers gun. The trooper pulled the knife through the button gaps of his shirt and drove straight through the BG's heart. Don't recall the brand or blade size.

I was on the receiving end of an Ice Pick back when I was in my late teens and I got jumped by a gang of three no good asshats in a street corner robbery attempt.
The pick was meant for my heart but, by sheer dumb luck (I was somewhat dumber and lots luckier back then) I somehow managed to block it.
It went all the way through my wrist and then the handle pulled off.
It being a cheap-ass Ice Pick is probably what saved me from "getting it" again since the metal pick was stuck in my wrist and the one BG was left holding just the wood handle.

If I had a knife on me back then I sure as heck would have used it.

It just dawned on me that some of our younger members have never seen or heard of an Ice Pick.
They do not know what an Ice Pick is....or an 8 Track Tape.
Before there were bags of Ice Cubes...folks used to buy a big block of Ice and chop it up with an Ice Pick.
The Beer Distributors use to give away free Advertising Ice Picks to their customers.
Then the watermelon and the beer, soda, etc...would go into that tub of chopped Ice.
Back when I was a little squirt my Uncle used to buy a big block of Ice and chop it up to keep things cold for the family picnic.

    ICE PICK.
A bit off the original subject, but since you brought it up, I remember as a kid when the milkman delivered milk directly to the houses. There were big blocks of ice in the truck to keep the milk, cream, butter cold. If you asked nicely, the milk man would use his ice pick to chip off a chunk of ice for you. Sucking on a chunk of ice was great on a hot summer day when you are 8 or 9 years old!!!

A very long time ago, in college, a few of the fresh-from-the-hood football players got on my elevator. Said they wanted my stuff I was carrying and they were going to stomp me regardless. I panicked, whipped out my beloved Bali Song and started flicking it open. Door opened and they left. Glad nothing came of the affair.

    Wow...that was some story.

I guess it goes to show once again how a good knife can be very handy.

When in 9th grade we moved from Turlock, California to Warwick, NY. The high school in Warwick was filled with the overflow from a wayward boys home that was in town. These guys were nasty. Had to pay one of them $.50 to use the bathroom and the teachers were afraid and did nothing. My Dad bought me a switch blade and taught me some basics (ex-army hand to hand instructor). Remember, I was in the 9th grade. Anyway, I stuck the $.50 guy in the neck and screamed at him a lot. I didn't hurt him much and he didn't report anything. From then on I was OK with these guys and I think $.50 guy would have let me pee in his shoe if I wanted.

About 20 years ago, I was on a business trip and a stung-out "youth" who decided to rob me while I was getting out of a rental car in a parking deck. He had a 6" hunting knife, I had a briefcase. The briefcase didn't survive the encounter. He got a 10 year sentence and an artificial left knee courtesy of the state of Ohio.
