    Self Defense Baseball Cap?

Does anyone know or have any experience with a Shomer-Tec Sap Cap Defense Tool? Basically, it looks like a blackjack but it's a hat. Looks like a gimmick to me.

I was wondering about those too. Can't see how they could be too effective.

A tactical hat? I see no purpose that could not be filled by a better option.

I think I would rather explain to a jury why I carried a gun than why I was wearing a sap hat.

I watched a "James Bond" movie once where the BG used his hat as a rather effective weapon.

Sure, I've looked at these off and on.

So let's look at the use-case for this item. It mainly operates in one scenario: [YOU] - 2.5 feet distance - [BAD GUY]

And there you are, with the bad guy in front of you, holding out a gun or knife in the standard mugging presentation.

Now you fidget and act like a victim, all the while making a natural, inconspicuous move to grab the bill of your Sap Cap. Then, in a fast whipping motion downward you slap the back of the cap onto the bad guy's wrist, fingers, whatever you can hit. Bones break, weapon falls down, and you run for it. Or take another shot - dealer's choice.

    What could possibly go wrong?

Well, lots of things. Often, the mugger approaches from behind, or from the side. Cap no good. Mugger might be 3 to 4 feet away. Cap no good. Might be two or three muggers. Cap no good. Mugger might be inside two feet, with the weapon pushed against you. Here, the cap might work if you can hit the fellow on the forehead or nose, but you'd probably get cut or shot.

So there you go. It's a tool designed to defend against a very specific encounter, and anything outside of that, you'll need a different strategy. Given that the odds of being mugged at all are fairly low, you've sprung 30 smackers and have to wear a heavy, unbalanced ball cap all the time.

Doing the math like this, seems better to practice your FoF skills, SA, and pack a better weapon. Unless... you're a bar or club bouncer. In that case, I'd strongly consider having one of these. It would fit your wardrobe, and the chances of having some lowlife pull a blade or broken bottle on you at close quarters is a highly likely situation.

I would go with the gloves over that hat esp in winter ... Nothing saids hello like a lead punch ..

Of course I rather take a blackjack over all this .. As nothing like spring loaded lead to the head to get a point acros ...

Beat me to it. Either that or Jethro Bodine's version.
