Knife recommendations?
I'm looking for a new knife with a 3" blade length. Apparently University policy outlaws anything larger than that (I had thought it was 3.5"). I refuse to walk around completely unarmed, so I need a new knife that I can carry without having to worry about getting hassled by any of the numerous campus police who never seem to have anything to do but give students a hard time. Any suggestions for a good blade? I'd like to keep the price point under $50, and I prefer a plain fixed blade, especially for a knife so short. Also, laws in my state prohibit double-edged blades, otherwise I'd just carry a push dagger and be done with it.

I'm not sure about a good single edged fixed blade of that length, but if you are interested in a folder I bought one of these a little while back:
http://newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=5710
And it is now my EDC knife. A Spyderco Delica with the wave feature. The wave (with a little practice) opens the knife as it is pulled from your pocket. It has a 3 inch blade, and is a back lock instead of a liner lock. I bought it from the store I linked to, they were very good to work with too, so look aroudn the sight some, they seem to have good deals.

Spyderco Endura or Delica, Cold Steel Voyager, Ka-Bar TDI (I assume you're talking folder, but the TDI is a good fixed option).
http://newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=5010 OOS, but they're around.
Cold Steel has these;

Any suggestions for alternate weapons? My only martial arts training happened when I was 14, but I can hold my own in a fight. However, I have no interest in fighting fair if my life is on the line. I've considered carrying some sort of cane/walking stick (which actually wouldn't be completely impractical since my knee is constantly acting up). I haven't the slightest idea how to use a kubotan, so I don't really know the advantage of one.

A good flashlight is always handy, and can be used in a defensive manner, beyong just blinding them.
A cane/walking stick is good (if you can pull it off, I never see anyone but professors with canes on campus).
Most alternative weapons are gonna require some training and practice to go with them though.

You grip it with the ends sticking out of your fist and hammer the crap out of the offending individual. If you've been in a fist fight, you can use one. You can do plexus jabs, joint control, etc, etc, but hammering and jabbing are effective and instinctive.

These make a good improvised knuck, and won't fold on your hand:http://www.edcknives.com/vcom/produc...23b75fbeac6d5d
The Perrin change bag, loaded with quarters isn't bad, either.

I second the 3" Delica with wave feature.

a good start is the ryan plan b from crkt. it's under 3", is fixed, comes plain or 50/50, and is now really cheap, since it's been discontinued. you can find it for under $30 most places. i own one, and like it, but fortunately, i'm not as limited in my choices as you are. try here: http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum4293.php

if you don't mind SOG (many here, including myself, will not buy them), there's this one: https://www.thebladeshop.com/index.a...OD&ProdID=1579
here's one more good site for knives on the cheap: http://www.knifezilla.com/
okay, i'm with the linking; i'm link happy today...

All the knives suggested are good. If you are considering a cane/walking stick, I'd reccomend Cold Steel's African Walking stick.
It's made out of a polymere & is just over 3' long with a 2 1/2" diameter ball at the end & undulations along the staff to make it easier to grasp for two-handed moves. The best thing is it lists for $30, but can be bought for around $20 (I paid just under $30, including shipping).

I like my folders, a Kershaw Tactical Blur and the Gerber folder I bought on Ebay, for less than $40. Not one for fixed blade carry.

I'd recommend two. Spyderco Delica with the WAVE feature or if you can spend the money a Emerson CQC-14 with WAVE which will set you back a little more but is in my mind one of the best linage of fighting folders out there. I have carried a CQC-7 for many a year and it still does what it needs to do.
As far as training goes, you cant go wrong with Emersons courses. His website list the dates or you can email him.
