does assisted opening = automatic?
In georgia, it is supposed to be illegal to carry an "automatic" knife. i have a kershaw scallion, which is "assisted opening". i know that the automatic knives have push button opening and assisted openers have a spring/tension bar assist, but does the law distinguish the difference? i'm looking at the scallion's bigger brother but i don't want to drop the $$ on the knife if i'm not supposed to be carrying it.

I have often wondered the same thing. It'd be nice for someone, like an LEO who knows the law, rather than someone's opinion, and see if it changes from state to state, which it probably does.

I am not LEO or a lawyer.
It's my understanding that as long as it takes thumb pressure against the blade first, it's ok. Like the SOGs you push open manually till about 30 degrees, then it does the rest for you.

You have to check you own state laws...in FL you can carry just about ANYTHING if you have a CCW permit...
My Kershaw Leek is fine in FL, but a big no-no (even with a CCW permit) some in other states.
Stay armed...know individual state laws prior to visiting...stay safe!

In California the assisted opener is not considered an automatic.

Let me throw out a piece of advice; as someone who knows just how well they're teaching the law to LEOs, I strongly advise against taking their advice on legal matters. Read the law yourself or call a lawyer.

i can definitely agree with that. cops around here don't even have a uniform understanding of the SOP with filing a traffic complaint. some clown hit my car while i was at my girlfriend's house the other day, didn't leave any info. so i called the police the next day (i noticed the damage at about 1 a.m., didn't feel like waiting for the cops that late), and they said to return to the scene and call for an officer to come out and take a statement. so i used a couple gallons of gas to get out there, call, they say they'll send someone, then call me back and tell me i needed to go to a precinct to file a statement. they DIDN'T tell me that the precinct, which was a few more miles out of my way, was CLOSED on saturdays.
rant over lol
i guess i'll just search threw the law again and see if i can find anything about it. the only thing i've been able to find is on carrying a "defensive/offensive" knife.

If you carry in Condition 3, you have two empty chambers. One in the weapon...the other between your ears.

A good place to start asking questions is your local district attorney's office.
