    I want an automatic knife.

I've always wanted a switchblade, but I don't need anything real fancy or expensive. It probably will be more a 'toy' than anything else.

Any suggestions of where to look and what to look for

I know in Texas the best place is gun shows. From just a few bucks up to several hundred. In the 100 buck range you can find a pretty good variety.

Before you start shopping around, be very sure of your state laws regarding automatics knives...especially if you plan on carrying.

If you're looking for the old classic style (like what many of us "older guys" grew up with), do a Google search for Italian Stiletto. You'll find lots of options (like others have said, verify your State and local laws, both for carry and possession).

The State laws permit carry. I've got a couple I was looking at on line but I'm not sure what ones to go for. I'm thinking no more than $100 but hoping for less

the auto-knife forum on BladeForums.com should provide you with some good info. You might also check out their "exchange" area.

If you carry in Condition 3, you have two empty chambers. One in the weapon...the other between your ears.

FWIW......auto knives are one of those things where you really do get what you pay for. If it's just a toy, don't worry....have at it and have fun. If you're at all interested in carrying it in any kind of serious, useful capacity, please consider a top brand. Microtech, Protech, Spyderco (new this year), and Severtech are all pricey but worth the money IMHO.

If you can legally carry/have one, go for it. For under $100, I think the SOG or Boker autos would be the best bang for the buck. Personally, for a relatively inexpensive auto, the Boker AK-74 is not a bad choice. I have one & it's not too bad.

Of course, when I want a real good one, I go to my MicroTech mini UDT or B/M Infidel OTF.

Just make sure if you travel it's like carrying in other states, you might be legal in you're state but forget you're carrying it and drive into a state where they're illegal and uhoh

I purchased the Benchmade Infidel OTF and took it through two tours to Iraq and still use it often.

I'm not sure what the wait time is on them now, but I'm very impressed with it.
