I'm looking for a folder...
Between 3 and 4 inches
Plain blade
Spring-assist of some sort
With good steel (keep chipping my 154CM Benchmade)
I saw Benchmade's 912-71 which looked about damn near perfect, but they only made 100 of them.
Should I be looking for a tanto, spear point, or some other style blade? The last folder I've owned was a Kershaw Scallion, and that was 8 years ago. I'm lost:smoke23:
The Kershaw Ken Onion Leek (assisted opener) offers several different blade steel products. I have two identical models...one was about $60, the other (with a harder steel blade) was $120...but they look identical.
Search 'em out...
If you're chipping 154CM then you are using the wrong kind of steel. 154CM is a harder steel that holds an edge well - but it is less ductile (more brittle) than a steel like 440 or aus 4, which would not chip, but does require more frequent sharpening under hard use.
I bought a Kershaw Blur and the tip seemed to be too thin for my liking. It may have been a manufacturing defect but it tapered down to almost paper thin at the tip for the last 1/2 inch.
I sold it and bought a SOG FlashII and it is very solid.
Worth noting, I got them both off e-bay and picked them both up for $30 shipped. At that price its worth experimenting a little till you find what you like.
